5.0 out of 5 stars The best singer of all time, March 13, 2001

This is a collection of Ian Gillan's solo career songs, not including his hits with Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. Being one of the most undervalued performers in rock music, Gillan's career started in 60's with Episode 6. His "star years" were definitely the beginning of 70's when he sang the lead role in the famous "Jesus Christ Superstar" simultaneously touring with Deep Purple. In 1973, shortly after recording his last album with Purple, Gillan leaves the band and stays away from music for a while. 1975 saw his new venture "Ian Gillan Band", which was a totally different experience than before. This time he performs some fusion of jazz and hard rock. Later on the name of the band changes to "Gillan" and so does the musical style. This is the period that is covered on this album.

The highlight of the disc is "Mr.Universe" and "Fighting man" from his 1979 album, heavy "Sleeping on the job", "MAD" and some later tracks like "Telephone Box" recorded with Roger Glover.

The album definitely points out the best years of Gillan's career, but generally I would not consider it a good overview of his earlier years.

This is an excellent album and a nice overview of the "Gillan" years but I do think the song "Born to Kill" is the studio version not the live version like it says on the back of the cd.
