5.0 out of 5 stars Previous reviewer seems not very knowledgeable....
This is an excellent album of music by one of the great contributors to lush, smooth, '50s-era instrumental arrangements. Obviously the previous reviewer was not aware of Mr. Gleason's considerable talents as an orchestra leader in addition to his TV-comedy fame. Bravo to the Jackie Gleasons of the world who master art in more than one medium!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing to dance about
This CD is full of slow songs all of which are at or near the same tempo. I'm a ballroom dancer and a trumpet player. This music is undanceable. I was hoping for some of the songs to be up tempo, but this CD makes elevator music seem like rock and roll.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ten "Plain Vanilla" Hits from The Great One, February 3, 2008

Jackie Gleason called what he did "plain vanilla" music. Vanilla is deceptive. You think it's simple, but there are over 250 compounds at work to create a flavor we just can't resist.

Gleason wasn't really a musician; he neither read or wrote music. He would "imagine" the music and then describe it to an assistant who would transcribe it. No matter if Jackie didn't have the technical chops to play the instruments or write the notes, under his supervision some really beautiful "mood music" was created in the 50's and 60's.

This collection contains ten beautiful remastered songs. There is another The Best of Jackie Gleason collection on Amazon with ten different songs. Hard to say which are the hands down best - they are all beautiful!

Recommended! However, if you like Gleason's music, go ahead and splurge on The Romantic Moods Of Jackie Gleason, a two CD set of 40 gorgeous songs completely remastered.

LUSH, like most of Jackie's 50'-60's instrumental work. Good value $$$ for the 10 cuts on this CD. Sit back pour yourself a Mai Tai & let Mr. Gleason put you in a relaxing mood.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Sweet It is!, September 11, 2008

The old gentle giant now long gone scores a hit with smooth strings, lush trumpet, and fabulous arrangements as he takes you back a few years in a deep recliner & a stiff vodka martini tinkling by your side!

Listen, relax, love it and recall the good ole days then and now.

I actually wore out my original CD of this selected recordings of Jackie Gleason and kept going back to it and hearing it skip, etc. I had to get a new one - I love the particular selections in this CD.

I also have a canary who when he hears this particular CD starts singing like mad!

This was a gift for Christmas. The gentleman wrote that he remembered the album from the past, so I sent this CD to him. He's very pleased. I have another Gleason CD and it is the sexiest music you'll ever want to hear. Really calming. I'm fortunate I could find this on Amazon.com, just wish the shipping weren't more expensive than the actual article.

1.0 out of 5 stars The best of who?, December 3, 2005
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
First of all, every Gleason fan knows that Jackie was reguarded by many as one of the greatest singers in the world. He was known for that as well as his comedy, acting, pool playing, the list goes on and on. However, there is no singing on this album. Zip. It's called the Best of Jackie Gleason and there's no Gleason. I was very disappointed when I found that out. When you order it, or even when it's in your hands there is no indication that he doesn't sing in it. I think the seller should put something like "Instrumental album. Or, orchastra only" I don't want to listen to an album of 40's era lounge tunes with no vocals when I order something entitled, the best of Jackie Gleason.
