If your a rock, blues, country player..or even a budding jazz player who wants an intro to the world of jazz guitar--then this is your book. You are bound to come away from this book/CD a better, more well rounded player. Man, the CD is worth the price alone!! If you don't read music--no worries--the TAB is fantastic. I only wish I had had this 20 yrs ago!! Another Wolf masterpiece!! Thanks Wolf!!

A great resource,
This review is from: Best of Jazz Guitar (Signature Licks) - With CD (Paperback)
I picked this book up based on endorsements on the cover. Guys like Jimmy Bruno, Pat Martino, and Hank Garland say very positive things about it.The tunes are: St Thomas (Tal Farlow, Jim Hall, Kenny Burrell) All Blues (George Benson Kenny Burrell, Pat Martino) So What (George Benson, Barney Kessel) All the Things You Are (Hank Garland, Pat metheny) Honeysuckle Rose (Joe Pass/ Herb Ellis duet, Charlie Christian) Satin Doll (Howard Roberts, Joe Pass) Yesterdays (Johnny Smith, Tal Farlow, Wes Montgomery) Misty (Wes Montgomery, Howard Roberts, Barney Kessel) I'll Remember April (Johnny Smith, Grant Green) How Insensitive (Pat Martino, Emily Remler) I am a hobbist so this is very useful for me. As for doing your own transcriptions, sure do it, but check it against these transcriptions or else you could have the WALLOWING IN YOUR OWN MISTAKES problem. Highlights for me: Joe Pass on Satin Doll (I wish he had Joe's Misty from Virtuoso 2), The Miles tunes, and the Wes tunes. I have been working on a chord melody of All the Things You Are so it was nice to see these versions (again Joe Pass's version would have been better).

Great way to build a jazz vocabulary, esp in/outside approaches to solos,

I 've been looking for some serious jazz material for sometime... this is it! You can hear the sounds you love and hear how to play them, then you can even figure out the theory behind it so you can use similar passages in your improvs... this book is seriously educational and practical...

Great purchase for jazz guitarist,

Great book. The tabs are right and despite the solo analysis could be deeper, the book remains worthwile. Definetly it's a very good purchase. If you are not familiar with jazz guitar and jazz music, I would recommend you to buy other books before, don't try to learn licks, try to undestand the music and the way it works.

Wolf Marshall is doing it again! Now in Jazz,

This review is from: Best of Jazz Guitar (Signature Licks) - With CD (Paperback)
I have always admired the skills of Wolf Marshall in all his educating career, magazine articles, books...etc.; especially in the eightees when rock guitar was booming. But I never thought of Wolf as a real Jazz Author, so recently I purchased both 'Best of Jazz' and another on Wes Montogomery and to be honest I was skeptical that he would deliver!I was 100% wrong and the books were fantastic and Wolf did it again! The quality of subscription, playing and production is super stuff. A must for any serious guitarist who passed the journey of Rock shredding, and now in the phase of playing classic jazz (Maybe getting a bit older as well!!) Both books are highly recommended and I would grade them more than 5 stars, if that was available Finally, Wolf if you write down any other books regarding Jazz, reserve me a copy.

book ok, cd terrible,
By A Customer
This review is from: Best of Jazz Guitar (Signature Licks) - With CD (Paperback)
The transcriptions in this book are ok I guess (alltough you'll learn even more by trancribing yourself). The comments are not so 'in-depth' but pretty interesting. The audio-cd however is not good. The comping is ok but Wolf Marshall's playing is very bad. He has terrible timing. And since good timing is probably the single most important element in playing jazz it sounds pretty awful. If you want to learn these solos, get the original recordings and listen to them carefully (and maybe use the backing track for practice). I was very dissapointed with the level of playing on the cd...

Wolf Marshall's Best of Jazz Guitar book has accurate transcriptions of 10 jazz standards played by the greats, and includes TAB and a CD for reference. Whether you play out these solos like a classical piece or just work on specific lines and phrases, this is a great way to build your skills as a jazz guitarist.

I've waited for years for this one! It's transcriptions of my record collection! My favorite solos that I never could pick out by ear. The tunes that are already firmly planted in my mind. Wolf just continues to amaze me with the subtlties in his tab notation; slides, bends, trills, appogeturas, vibratos - it's all there in the actual key of the recording. For instance the versions of "Misty" is done in F by Barney Kessel, G by Wes Montgomery and Eb (the original) by Howard Roberts. I'm blown away by this book! I'm going to dive into this book this summer and emerge a better player! If you are ready for this book you're going to love it. If your not, You can just listen to Wolf's playing, which is mind boggling in it's own right and choose a different lick every day. It is an encyclopedia of cool licks in that respect. Wolf, You are Da Man!!

Great book. A total primer on great jazz guitar solos. The playing on the companion CD is highly accurate and a great guide for the solos. Totally awesome.

Best Of Jazz Guitar is a remarkable, step-by-step presentation of jazz guitar styles and techniques, incorporating the music of famous guitarists such as Tal Farlow, Grant Green, Jim Hall, Joe Pass and many more. Filled cover to cover with accessible sheet music, each song in this volume is annotated with a very short biography of its author, step-by-step instructions for proper arrangement, signatures, and also performance notes to better help beginners. Also included is an audio CD to better help amateur musicians learn how to play at a professional level. Novice and intermediate jazz guitarists alike will appreciate this singularly excellent how-to guide for playing the jazz guitar.
