I am in the middle of a very excellent bookgiven to me recently in Penzance by one of my sisters-in-law. It is "TheBest Of Jazz" by an author called Humphrey Lyttelton. He has devoted a chapter each to a selection of jazz giants male and female. His writing is of a very superior standard, he also did the cover illustration, and ofcourse, he can play note for note, many of the musical examples he examines. The obvious fact that he has a copy of each of the jazz milestones discussed in detail in the text is also a cause for envy. Highly recommended to the point of being mandatory.
