Jefferson Airplane ~ Best Of

Amazon.com

Since the Jefferson Airplane hail from San Francisco and came of age at the dawn of the psychedelic era, they've been typecast as a psychedelic band. However, one listen to this greatest hits album should dispel that notion and clearly illustrate that here is one angry group of punks. Singer Grace Slick caterwauls, drummer Spencer Dryden crashes all over the place, and the guitars whammy way out of tune. The petulant crackle underneath "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" is obvious. The wacked out energy of "3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds" confirms it. They may write with David Crosby ("Wooden Ships") but they were just waiting around for Johnny Rotten. --Rob O'Connor

... all in all the album lacks continuity, and the last two tracks shouldn't be on the album at all. During the years of the classic lineup of Jefferson Airplane (Surrealistic Pillow-Volunteers) they really didn't do any songs that I would call bad, and if you want to get into the group I highly recommend you buy the actual albums. However, if you must have a collection or you just don't know what to buy, "The Worst of Jefferson Airplane" is a better place to start.

Jefferson Airplane were a huge part of the Summer of Love in 1967. 41 years later, they sound just as good today as they did that long ago.

This set, 'The Best of Jefferson Airplane' features 10 shining moments from the legendary San Francisco band.

How does this collection measure up?

Positives
-Their two radio hits, 'Somebody To Love' and 'White Rabbit,' both appear here.
-Underrated gems are here! How often do you see 'Wild Tyme' and 'Share A Little Joke' on a compilation?
-THE SOUND QUALITY IS GREAT

Negatives
-There is SO much missing. Where are 'Volunteers,' 'Crown Of Creation,' 'It's No Secret,' 'Watch Her Ride,' 'Plastic Fantastic Lover' and 'The Ballad Of You And Me And Pooneil'?
-Since this disc is so skimpy, most, if not all of those songs WOULD FIT HERE!!!

Overall, if you're a new fan of Jefferson Airplane and you find this in a bargain bin, go ahead and buy it. Otherwise, buy 'The Essential Jefferson Airplane' or 'Platinum & Gold Collection.' Those are much better compilations.

But this is still enjoyable, nonetheless.

Recommended for any Jefferson Airplane fan if you find it in a bargain bin. ENJOY!!!

The Rob O'Connor review above declares that Jefferson Airplane should not be typecast as a psychedelic band, and he makes a good argument. However, the fact is that Jefferson Airplane was a pioneer band of the psychedelic music movement. I guess what you must say is that the band was so trendsetting that it not only created genres but it also transcended them!

This ten track Best Of album gives the listener a good feeling for the band and their work. Yeah, you could argue endlessly about what songs should be included, and I probably would have added a few. But, nonetheless, it is a very good album!

This Airplane album is a collection of the influential bands greatest hits, and is pretty great. From Acid Rock classic anthems like "White Rabbit," to the ever popular "Somebody to Love," Jefferson Airplane truly shines. Songs from this album have also made it to major soundtracks, including the Cable Guy, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Recommended? Yes.

Well, I love Jefferson Airplane, but I think they bunched up all the good songs (favorites) on the first side and the second side I hardly ever listen to. They should have mixed the songs up more thoroughly. My three favorite songs are on the first side back to back: 3/5 of a mile in 10 seconds, white rabbit, and don't you want somebody to love.-Sometin' Kool
