Editorial Reviews

Product Description

"The Best of Jimmy Hughes" includes 18 of the Best Jimmy Hughes tracks recorded during his groundbreaking years at FAME. On the disc are 16 songs that have never before made available on CD. The disc also includes a two hour plus roundtable discussion recorded at world renowned FAME Studios with Hughes, the engineers, producers and musicians who helped record these classic records and create the Muscle Shoals Sound.

Soul singer Jimmy Hughes was the first multi-hit artist to be associated with the "Muscle Shoals Sound". Hughes recorded a string of R&B hits in the 1960s at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, putting the small Alabama town on the world's musical map. A unique blend of R&B and rock and roll with a taste of country, Hughes' records helped lay the foundations of classic Southern Soul Music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Long time coming to CD, December 23, 2008

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Though his recordings were among the earliest to come out of the legendary FAME recording studio in Muscle Shoals, Jimmy Hughes' music only now sees the light of day on legitimate domestic CD. Hughes had varying success on the charts in the mid-60's but is mostly remembered for his initial hit, "Steal Away", a recording with an impact greater than its at-the-time unimpressive showing in the lower reaches of the pop top-20.

This collection of 18 tracks includes the aforementioned "Steal Away" along with other b-sides, album cuts and his three other singles that made their way into the top-100 of the pop charts, if only briefly. Competently done with decent sound quality, albeit all mono, this piece includes an eight-page fold-out liner notes booklet and, as a "bonus" feature, an MP3 with a recording of a gathering of Hughes and other early Muscle Shoals personnel from 2008.

This new package is a welcome addition to the collector's 60's music library, and plugs a long-standing hole in the realm of digital music available from the era.

5.0 out of 5 stars WORSHIP THE GROUND, April 20, 2009

At last, it is here. Jimmy Hughes. WOW! This music got me through some rough times when I was going the pangs of early adulthood. Why Not Tonight, Neighbor Neighbor and of course, I Worship The Ground You Walk On. This man could do it. Everybody knows Steal Away. Though Johnnie Taylor might have gone a little further with it, I feel this is the definitive version. I think he changed labels to do, I Like Everything About You. But, that was easier to get. JIMMY HUGHES. WOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jimmy Hughes is Great, October 27, 2009

I remember when I was 9 years old, My mama used to love her self some Jimmy Hughes. She passed away in 1964 and in my mind, I can still hear my mama sing "Hi Heel Sneakers and Why Not Tonight". I guess I fell in love with Jimmy Hughes and the blues when I was Nine years old. I know several artists have re-done Steal Away but, you can't bet your last dollar, "Nobody does it better than Jimmy Hughes". The Blues are some good memories that I have of my Mom and Dad. I shop Amazon.com for all of my favorite Blues CDs. The Best of Jimmy Hughes CD is off the chain and I'm loving every moment of it.
