5.0 out of 5 stars The most underrated artist in country music's storied past!
John Conlee has a voice that will sooth the roughest soul. His voice is more powerful than the cry of a steel guitar. My twenty something generation of country music fans should not miss out on this treasure from the past. His story telling ability will bring a smile while his crooning draws a tear. A must buy!

3.0 out of 5 stars This is not his best
I don't get it. Normally, I would give the Best of John Conlee a five star rating without thinking twice. I love this guy's songs and I love his style, but like where is Rose Colored Glasses? OK, I know a lot of people consider it to have been played to death and something of a cliche, but it should still be on a recording of his best songs, don'tcha think? More...

OK, I know a lot of people consider it to have been played to death and something of a cliche, but it should still be on a recording of his best songs, don'tcha think? More importantly, where is I Don't Remember Loving You? This is, without a doubt, his best song ever. It's much better than Common Man for goodness sake. There are some good songs on here, but it's just not complete.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Much Curb Appeal Here!, January 5, 2003
By
Donald R. Skaggs (Fort Worth, Texas USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best Of John Conlee, The (Audio CD)
The CD "Best of John Conlee" represents the worst of Mike Curb and his organization. What Curb gives with his right hand-a low price; he takes back with the left hand in questionable materials. It isn't outright misrepresentation. Labeling something "Best Of" implies that someone had to make a value judgment on what's best. "Greatest Hits" on the other hand is something that can be measured by looking at "Billboard" charts. To Curb's credit, there are twelve selections on this CD rather than the customary ten. Six of the selections are legitimate hits, taken from Conlee's work at MCA and 16th Avenue. The other six are not.

The liner notes are credited to Dan Ovens. "John's distinctive, compelling music style is most apparent in this exceptional collection of his hits during the 80's:[sic] "Common Man," "In My Eyes," "I'm Only In It For Love," "As Long As I'm Rockin' With You," ... all in 1883, and all #1 gold records! Also featured are more chart winners and Conlee favorites: "Hit The Ground Runnin'," "Fellow Travelers," "Fire And Smoke," "River of Time," and more.

It should be noted that "Fire and Smoke" was a hit for Earl Thomas Conley, not John Conlee and that, as you might guess, "Fire and Smoke" was not on the CD as Ovens claims. Hey Dan, Conlee and Conley are pronounced the same and the two men were contemporaries, but not the same person.

2.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT the best of John Conlee., May 18, 2010
This review is from: Best Of John Conlee, The (Audio CD)
I love my 20 gr hits c.d., but this "Best of John Conlee" c.d.
doesn't seem to be worth owning.
Here are 4 of his biggest hits which you can find many other places,
and 2 that charted later.
"Hit the ground runnin'" and "Fellow travelers" both in 1989,
are his 29th & 30th charted songs.
There are only 4 songs here that you don't seem to find any where else,
and none of them were single releases.

They are -
"Don't get me started"
"Where are the peices of my heart"
"Till you were gone"
"Knowin' you were leavin'".

Footnote: The "Country Heart" c.d. has the aforementioned two tracks,
plus Conlee's 31st and 32nd, (and last) songs to chart,
which are "Hopelessly yours" in 1989, and "Doghouse" in 1990.

I was recommended to John Conlee by a friend knowlegeable in Country music. I had not heard him until purchasing this album. I am now a fan. He is not played as often as he deserves. This excellent compilation of his best will keep you company on the road for many a day. I recommend purchase.

This album is a good starter album but John Conlee "Classic" album has all the great hits on it that's my opinion. It cost more but if your a Big John Conlee Fan sometimes money doesn't matter.

5.0 out of 5 stars slick marketing, Curb!, January 25, 2003
This review is from: Best Of John Conlee, The (Audio CD)
any fan of music will certainly know that 16th Avenue Records was a flop. they lured Charley Pride and John Conlee to their camp in the late '80s and the label folded by 1990! John is one of my all-time favorites and i love the fact that Curb stockpiled this CD with Conlee's rare songs from 1989's "Fellow Travelers" album (in fact, eight of the songs are from his 1989 album; the ones left off are "Hopelessly Yours" and "Almost Free"). already having everything he's recorded since ROSE COLORED GLASSES in 1978, this CD provided nothing new but it wasn't suppose to. it's a truck or car stereo type of CD....which means that it's designed more as travel music instead of sitting at home or doing the housework music. when you apply the CD in that context, there's nothing to moan about. Conlee has limited appeal {even when he was having hits, Conlee's main audience were the working class and or the "common man}. i don't think it's fair to turn a deaf ear on an artist's songs simply because they weren't released as singles or didn't hit the charts. There ARE some artists that fill their albums with strong material but only the strongest of the strong get pitched to radio stations. besides that, i love his raspy, unique voice. This CD contains some hits from his 1982 BUSTED album and his 1983 IN MY EYES album. the rest of the tracks are from 1989's FELLOW TRAVELERS.

John Conlees music is enjoyable. There is something in his music that everyone can relate to. This isn't the flash in the pan "pop" country music we are subjected to on the radio. If you like real country music ----then you will love this!
