The original John Lee Hooker,
By
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
This great CD contains the best songs from Hooker's best period. The best versions of Boogie Chillun, Little wheel, Hobo Blues, Dimples and other great numbers are all here.It takes an emotionally flat and musically ignorant person to ignore Hookers's magnificent power and emotion, and to look for Jazz influence in his style. Hookers played African music in its Blues medium, in unparalelled beauty. I am sorry for those who do not have ability to enjow raw blues. For the many that do, I recommend this CD.

I first got this album on cassette tape back in the '80s after seeing Hooker's cameo appearance in The Blues Brothers. I must have been maybe 12. I was a little too young to understand everything I heard. As the years passed I listened to it more often and started to learn the blues roots of the rock music I became a fan of. I was soon mesmerized whenever playing that tape. I remember listening to Blues Before Sunrise after breaking up with a girlfriend in high school. Finding this on CD is a treasure. Now I listen everything from Led Zeppelin to Tool, from Eric Clapton to Disturbed. However I decide to binge on rock and metal, I always purge with blues - Muddy Waters, BB King, Elmore James, Albert King, etc. But this is the one album that started it all for me.

Some of the best blues around,

I'm new to John Lee Hooker. My favorite veterinarian introduced me to him and suggested this particular CD as the epitome of Hooker's work. Note: I have not heard the rest of his work, so this is not my personal assessment.
What I will personally say is this CD is good stuff. The sound quality is excellent and the music is impressive. Of course, we have the expected "Boom Boom." But, every one of the 20 songs on this CD is a good listen. My favorites: "Boom Boom" "Boogie Chillun" "Talk that Talk" Rebecca Kyle, August 2008
