5.0 out of 5 stars Melodious reggae June 27, 2007
Format:Audio CD
Johnny Nash had a slew of hits during the 1970s with his reggae ditties that often made the top 10 on both sides of the Atlantic. They're all still very enjoyable and some, like I Can See Clearly Now, have been much covered by other artists.

My favourites include There Are More Questions Than Answers, Reggae On Broadway, Guava Jelly, Stir It Up and Tears On My Pillow. Oh and Halfway To Paradise with a reggae rhythm is a slab of sonic ecstasy. The melodies are really gripping and most of the songs have a type of hypnotic effect on the listener.

Nash's sound reminds me a bit of Desmond Dekker, although it is more slick and polished and about as far away from roots reggae as you can get, barring Boney M's reggae excursions. Still very original, very catchy and highly enjoyable after all these years.

3.0 out of 5 stars With A Different Title This Is A 5-Star Release July 1, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Although there are a fair number of CD compilations available covering the work of vocalist/guitarist and sometimes actor Johnny Nash, born in Houston, Texas on August 19, 1940, you can be certain of one thing: not ONE of them contains all 17 songs he put onto the various national charts in the U.S. - the R&B listings, the Adult Contemporary (AC) charts and especially the much more lucrative Billboard Pop Hot 100. Not even this 2009 volume from Columbia Europe titled "The Best Of" or a 1995 release from Black Tiger Records blaring "The Very Best Of." which means the casual use of those terms is based solely upon the personal opinions of whoever produced both releases and not the results of consumer response. And let's face it, any artist worth his/her/their salt would have killed for a hit single back in the days of the 78- and then 45-rpm discs. Not to mention their labels.

In this volume, for example, they concentrate only on his hits from 1965 to 1974 and completely ignore the B-sides OR the four he registered in his early days for ABC-Paramount from 1957 to 1959. And even there they are not consistent when defining "best of" - regardless of how they look at the term. How else do you explain the inclusion of the October 1965 # 88 Hot 100 (also # 4 R&B) Let's Move And Groove (Together), which came out on JoDa 102 b/w Understanding, but not the higher-ranking December 1968 # 58 Hot 100 (also # 46 R&B) You Got Soul, which came out on JaD 209 b/w Don't Cry?

4.0 out of 5 stars very happy and liked August 13, 2012

Have not heard very much about this artist in a long while, but this cd is truly a good one of his

songs. I like this era - the 60s and the quality of the music and his voice is magical. Strongly suggest
that you add to your collection.
