5.0 out of 5 stars Best of, March 16, 2002

An excellent introduction to the early years of Johnny Winter. It shows the scope of this often overlooked musician. A true american genius. "Johnny B. Goode" a ripping version that Chuck Berry would be proud of!!! And he plays it in the key of "B". "Come on in my kitchen" is a beautiful slide piece. And the best tune, in my opinion, "It's my own fault", shows off his vocal range and phrasing and a million guitar licks that every guitar player should know. Awesome and inspiring.

This is a nice CD that covers the early years of Johnny's career. His range in many aspects is one of a kind. Its nice to feel the music rather than just listen to the music. For all you young rock and blues fans take notice, Johnny truly is an American guitar legend. Go out and get this one now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great starter CD, June 21, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Best Of Johnny Winter (Audio CD)
This is a great CD to get you going into the world of Johnny Winter.

I'm not too thrilled about the Rick Derringer tune but a little bit of everything is covered here. From the rocking 'Johnny B. Goode' to the slide playing on 'Highway 61 Revisited' to the shredding on 'Hustled Down In Texas' to the melodic blues of 'It's My Own Fault', this is a great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Johnny Still Sounds Good, January 7, 2009

This review is from: Best Of Johnny Winter (Audio CD)
After all these years, Johnny Winter sounds just as fresh as he did back in 1969, when his debut album came out. His blistering guitar playing made him Stevie Ray Vaughn before there was a Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Johnnny shamelessly put the blues right in your face when most people were listening to the Beatles and the Beach Boys.

Johnny Winter has always been honest uncontrived - a pure guitarist and bluesman. This album is truly the best of the best.

After all of the players that have come and gone since Johnny took the stage, he still sounds fresh, fast, and soulful. There are not a whole lot of people who can touch him.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ah, Blues Rock..., May 22, 2010

I'm a bigger fan of Edgar Winter than brother Johnny admittedly, but I still enjoyed his "Best Of" album. However, the rendition of "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" that's included was different than what I've been used to, although maybe I'm used to the faster Rick Derringer rendition from "Guitar Hero II." Still, the slower version is worth listening to...

You know if Johnny did't exist you would have to think he was a work of fiction cooked up in some promoters mind in the late 60's high powered Blues Boom. Johnny was certainly in the ritht place at the right time. The man was the real deal with a depth of talent rarely seen...and he was well versed in a lot of music styles besides the blues and thats what sets JW apart from the crowd--besides being a 6' albino from Texas. All in all this is a great collection of songs from an American Treasure..He dam well should be!!

I think he is one of the best musicians that has redone the blues, he could play the guitar and make it sound like his second nature
