Joe Martin is a very inspired man. His humor is intelligent with appeal to nearly everyone. Many of the cartoons and comics in this book are knee-slappers. I tried to read just a few pages at a time to prolong the enjoyment. There is a very funny section of jokes that didn't make it into the newspapers. I highly recommend this book.

This is an incredible collection, and collects the best comics by Joe Martin from over the years. I laughed at every page.
I'm a huge Mr. Boffo fan, and its main features are Mr. Boffo comics. Joe Martin's work reminds me of the Far Side, but he's much better and much funnier. I highly recommend it.
The sections in order are:
1. The best of Mr. Boffo--In my opinion his best. Earl Boffo is in a variety of situations, from Hell, to Bumhood, to medieval times.
2. The best of Willy 'n Ethel--Willy is unemployed, and jokes about his laziness
3. The best of Cats with Hands--Shows a world dominated by cats, with cats in situations like executive meetings
4. The best of Porterfield--Porterfield is a lazy employee who keeps getting fired from his job.
5. Mr. Boffo comics that were pulled because of how "sick, tasteless, and perverted" they are.

This book broke my heart! I have most of his other books, and I was excited that at long last a new collection, or at least a new best-of compilation was finally available. I expected there would be a few overlaps with the books I already owned, but there'd also be some new cartoons that didn't make it to the books. He hasn't published a book in many years, but the cartoons keep coming - surely SOME of them are among the best?

But, no. This is a clip job from his prior books - not even a new introduction or any commentary or even a funny opening. Just cartoons taken from the other books and tossed into this one.

If you haven't seen them, these are uniformly hilarious in a way that few other cartoonists can approach. But if, like me, you're already a fan, this book is just a rip-off.

I've been a MR. BOFFO fan for years. It's about the only comic I ever bother to read any more so I was furious when my local paper stopped running it. Glad his books are coming back in print and this new collection is out. I was not familiar with CATS WITH HANDS or PORTERFIELD at all, and had only seen WILLY 'N ETHEL once or twice. It's definitely a collection that will leave you wanting more - yes, I'm also ready for the other 25,800!

My only complaint is the printing quality of the book. Some of strips look like they were run off on an old dot matrix printer and then photocopied. I'm sure they did the most cost-effective print job to keep the book affordable and for the most part it's not too distracting. But I have two earlier MR. BOFFO books and the comparison side by side is very telling. Still, it's all about the actual comics themselves and I'm so glad to be able to see them again - or for the first time. Keep these collections coming.
