Biography

Joy Division formed in Salford (near Manchester, England) as an immediate reaction to punk: to be precise, singer Ian Curtis, guitarist Bernard Sumner and bassist Peter Hook decided to pursue music as a direct result of seeing the Sex Pistols famously play at Manchester's Lesser Free Trade Hall in 1976. Forming eventually as a foursome (with drummer Stephen Morris) in 1977, Joy Division would… Read more in Amazon's Joy Division Store

Editorial Reviews

Limited two CD edition of the 2008 compilation from the Manchester Post-Punk legends featuring a bonus disc that includes eight tracks recorded at two separate Peel Sessions in 1979. The main CD features 14 of their best tracks including the seminal 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', 'She's Lost Control' and 'Transmission'. Joy Division were formed in the wake of the Punk explosion in England and by 1980 they were the hottest band in the UK. In May of 1980, on the eve of their first US tour, lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide. The film Control by director Anthon Corbjin details the life of Ian Curtis, and is one of the best-reviewed Rock biopics ever. Rhino UK.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good overview of the JD oeuvre, January 23, 2011
A four-star collection of six-star music.

THE ONE-SENTENCE EDITORIAL 'REVIEW' OF THE JAPANESE VERSION IS WRONG. The content on that issue is NOT exclusive to the Japanese release, but to all non-US releases, such as the UK version. The US one is a 1-disc, 14-track packages, while the others are all a pair of 10-track discs.

This collection is all previously-released material, but it is a good starting point for someone new to JD or coming back to the band after many years. There are quite a few other JD collections, but this one covers them broadly, and without delving too deep into material that only hardcore fans would appreciate, like low-quality live recordings. The Peel Sessions material on disc 2 - essentially live one-take demos with professional recording equipment, for a UK radio show - capture the urgency and rawness of the band's live act without making anyone's face crinkle because of tinny or blown-out audio quality. The studio tracks are what many if not most would consider more or less the bulk of their "best" work, though of course any real fan of the band is likely to have a favorite or two or ten missing from this compilation.

General JD fans have no need of this release, as there's nothing new here, not even remastering.
