5.0 out of 5 stars A great book on the subject

I found this book fairly uninformative for me, but I can see this book being extremely helpful to the novice junior handler. When I read this book, I had already been handling my Flat-coat and English Springer for quite some time and therefore knew a lot of the basics.

This review is from: Best Junior Handler!: A Guide to Showing Successfully in Junior Showmanship (Paperback)
The book, Best Junior Handler, states in it's preface that it is basically a text book for the junior handler. The subject matter covers everything from choosing a breed to competing at Westminster as well as history on the event. There is a chapter with information for the more experienced handler. The manner in which Ms. Olejniczak handles the the subject is very relaxed and talks to you rather than at you. She tries to encourage juniors with anecdotes of her own experiences (especially negative ones) during her career, to not only provide comfort to those who have bad days when they or their dogs didn't do well, but also to encourage them to keep on trying when it seems the odds are against them. Junior Handling is just that, HANDLING the dog. This book stresses the importance of the relationship between a handler and his or her dog. However, it also provides information for the handler on how to succeed and comport themselves properly in this sport. No one enters to lose, they want to win. Ms. Olejniczak has provided helpful tips in this book for that purpose. Read it for yourself and find out.

This is a great book, I recommed it to anyone who wants to learn how to compete in Jr. Show or just wants to learn to handle! This book is written by a past winner in Jr. Showsmanship, so you really get the scoop on the judges and what they want to see. This book is also great for someone who is already showing in Jr. Showsmanship (like me) and wants some great tips!- buy this one!

2.0 out of 5 stars Helpful to the Novice, July 20, 1999

This review is from: Best Junior Handler!: A Guide to Showing Successfully in Junior Showmanship (Paperback)
Although I find Connie Vanacore's book more helpful and informative, this book was alright as far as Junior Handler books go. I found that her stories tended to end with her winning, which is not how juniors always is. I'm not saying she sounded arrogant or anything, but I think maybe she could have been a bit more realistic sometimes. Some of the information was dated, but so it is in many other books. Overall, it was ok. I am a junior right now, and although it didn't seem to offer much to the more experienced junior, it could definitely offer something to the novice in the field. It was a tie between 2 and 3 stars, they just don't offer half-stars on here.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you've ever showed, trained--or just loved a dog--read on, July 6, 1999

This review is from: Best Junior Handler!: A Guide to Showing Successfully in Junior Showmanship (Paperback)
Junior Handlers, who read this book, will learn the most important handling lesson of all: that the love and respect you share with your dog will make you a winner--no matter the outcome of the competition. This easy-to-understand, carefully-written guide for junior handlers was just as much fun to read for even the non-professional, but dog-loving character, like me. For a few hours, I was well into the world of Jr. Showmanship. And I enjoyed every minute in the ring with Anne Olejniczak!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, July 5, 1999

This review is from: Best Junior Handler!: A Guide to Showing Successfully in Junior Showmanship (Paperback)
I found this book to be very informative. After thirty years of owner handling my dogs, it's always nice to find someone with a positve and real outlook on this hobby. I actually picked up a few tips myself. However I have been giving this book as a gift to new hobbiest, to help them learn the ropes. Showing dogs can be a rough sport , it's best to learn that right in the beginning! This young lady has put it down straight, with no sugar coating. I've been thanked many times by people I've given this book to as gifts. I also read the other reviews, especially those by so called other junior handlers. Sounds like so much SOUR GRAPES to me. I believe it would be an asset to any young handlers library.

Kudos to Anne and all involved in the publication of this book. Any novice handler should benefit immensely from the information contained in "Best Junior Handler!: A Guide to Showing Successfully in Junior Showmanship" By the way--the previous negative reviews listed on this page appear to have been written by an imbecile.
