Heavy Metal Country,

At their heart, the Kentucky Headhunters are essentially a country band for people who are either ashamed or embarassed to admit they like country. Although present at the birth of that spawn of Satan we all know as "new country," the group stood out from the rest of the pack due to their loving use of electric guitars and amplifiers and their willingness to embrace rock and roll (heck, their drummer can be spotted wearing a vintage Circus magazine T-shirt in one of their early videos). And rock out they do, primarily on an eccentric selection of covers like "Walk Softly On This Heart Of Mine," "Oh, Lonesome Me," "The Ballad Of Davy Crockett," and Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit In The Sky." Why weren't these guys huge? Fun!

Country Music that Rocks,

At their best, The Kentucky Headhunters combined the power of rock and roll with elements of their country roots into a heady guitar laden brew. Unfortunately, they were no great shakes as songwriters and had to rely on outside sources for much of their material. Some of their best tunes were covers, most particularly the butt-kicking version of "Spirit in the Sky" that rescues the song from its hippie origins. They also proved they could do The Beatles with a cover of "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," and another late-60s classic "Let's Work Together," is updated for the Reagan-Bush era. Not all of this stuff works, however. Particularly lame is the cover of "The Ballad of Davy Crockett." But overall, this is still a decent collection of country rock tunes.

I heard this CD at a dance club, and the Ballad of Davey Crockett took me back to my youth. Upon purchasing it for the one song, I found I had danced to many of their other hits. I got my money's worth, and I love this CD!~

These guys have the talent and energy to make good music. Not a bad song on any of their albums. Each album usually has an "oldie" they cut again like "Lonesome Me", or "Ballad of Davy Crocket". BEST GROUP EVER!

THE KENTUCKY HEADHUNTERS-STILL PICKIN/BEST OF: THE KENTUCKY HEADHUNTERS were an unkempt, fun-loving band of yahoos that stood out from the crowded pack of cookie cutter country groups in the 90s. Although they seldom wrote their own hits, their irreverent, rompin'-stompin' style stood Music City on its ear as they pumped out southern rock rave ups of DON GIBSON's classic OH LONESOME ME and bluegrass father BILL MONROE's WALK SOFTLY ON THIS HEART IOF MINE. DOUG PHELPS' nasally holler and the band's hard-edged guitar work also cranked up reworkings of WAYLON's ONLY DADDY THAT'LL WALK THE LINE and THE BALLAD OF DAVY CROCKETT; even PHELP's more bloozey-throated replacement MARK ORR got in a greasy shot via CARL PERKINS' rockabilly ditty DIXIE FRIED. Earhy takes on the BEATLES, RNB's WILBURT HARRISON, and pop one hitter NORMAN GREENBAUM nailed down even more of the HEADS' varied influences. Scoring either their flawless debut PICKIN' ON NASHVILLE or this rollicking roundup of career highs is "sound advice" for fans of JOHNNY CASH and SKYNYRD alike. RATING: FOUR COW PATTIES

This cd is as good as it get`s. It came right on time and the price is good. I gave it 4 star`s and more. The song`s THAT I LIKE ( OH LONESOME ME) and a song that i have not head be for ( LET`S WORK TOGETHER). To me the THE KENTUCKY HEADHUNTERS can make a slow dull song in to a good fast song that you can play over and over. THANK YOU.

Excellent CD. Kentucky Headhunters at their Outlaw country best. "Dumas Walker" and "Walk softly, on this Heart of Mine" are the two top songs. Would definitely recommend.
