4.0 out of 5 stars Michael Jordan of Jazz
Kirk Whalum is truly the Michael Jordan of Jazz. His worst music is better than most artist's best. This is a very good CD, but not really the Best of Kirk Whalum. From hearing his new CD, I have a feeling that the best of Kirk Whalum is still coming. Still, I would definitely buy this CD again.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Worst of Kirk Whalum
Kirk Whalum is a fantastic saxophonist but this one is a disaster!! It doesn't deserve a mention let alone a place in the collection of true Jazz lovers. Please do not judge Whalum by this CD. I'd recommend 'Unconditional' instead.

2.0 out of 5 stars His later releases are much better, April 11, 2002

Kirk Whalum is one of my favorites, but this CD jeopardizes his current releases. The recordings sound like they were performed in a garage, not a studio, and the background instruments sound digitally created like that from a Casio keyboard.
Don't waste money on this one.

His release "Unconditional" is incredible! Spend your money there!

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT!, October 4, 2005

The other reviews are wrong! I am a serious jazz fan..and I think the other comments are completely rediculous. I LOVE this album! I've listened to Kirk for years and I relate to the tracks on this album. A DEFINITE album for the collection.

While I listen to a great deal of jazz and smooth jazz, I find that the best listening in this CD is the stuff that leads him back to his gospel roots in the Gospel According to Jazz CD's that follow. This is an interesting collection that left me less than awe struck for some reason. I like Kirk's ideas and melodies, but his solo work is reserved and processed---more like what you would expect from a musician playing for juries or in a master class in front of his peers (college music majors should relate to this kind of starchy playing). It is accurate but lacks the depth of a Michael Brecker, Mark Colby or Dave Sanborn. Still, I would rather listen to this CD collection than a million Kenny G albums.

I am glad I own it, but wouldn't want to hear the rest of the albums that accompany each selection if this is the best.
