OK as a Pocket Travel Guide, but not enough detail,

There are few travel guide books about Kuala Lumpur so this is a reasonable option with coverage on the popular sites, hotels, dining, and general info and basic maps. I am disappointed that there isn't more detail - the book is kind of thin. They could easily leave out the hotel info and make this better as a pocket guide to carry around while exploring the city. Lonely Planet which coverages Peninsula Malaysia in their full guidebook is more useful and comprehensive overall (as would be expected). I was hoping the city map included street by street detail, at least in the central tourist areas, but sadly it does not. I guess they expect you to carry this and a separate map too which is not the reason I purchased it. I'll plan on looking for a compact street level map when I arrive.

I'm a big fan of the pocket-sized books that you use as an overview to a city. If I'm on a time constraint and have a few days in a city, I want to be able to hit the highlights of a city. Plus, if this fits in my cargo pants pocket. The book serves as a great overview for KL with lots of pictures to rival the DK Top Ten series of books.
This book is pretty helpful in planning the highlights of what will probably be a short trip to Kuala Lumpur. I'll use this book as my overview book and the The Rough Guide to Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei 6 (Rough Guides) as the more comprehensive guide for more obscure adventures. Edit 12.16.2009: The KL map was pretty worthless in this book, and I ended up using The Rough Guide map in the book above. The book is decent in the information, but without a good map, there's no real value-add in getting this book. |
