before all the slow songs larry graham gave up the funk big time.it's alright is so funky and the jam still bangs after all these years.if you buy anything by this great musician this is the one to have.it grooves for days.he still can thump a bass like nobodys business.

"Funky as nine cans of wet magic shave." One of the most influential musicians ever! His unique bass playing style (thumb & finger) is used by just about every bass player now in all musical styles. Funk standouts "The Jam" and the "Hot fun in the summertime" flavored "Your Love" highlight this package. "One in a million you" and "Is it love" for the quiet storm in you & the under rated "Sooner or Later." The magnificent "Can you handle it" is edited but still F-U-N-K-Y! Fans of 70's funk, Sly & the Family stone (Larry was a member) will be so- so satisfied.

Very Good If You Don't Mind EDITED Versions.,

The music of course is outstanding as you would expect from Larry Graham. I was highly disappointed in the fact that this disk contained many edited (short)versions of songs. This would have gotten 5-stars otherwise.

Underrated Player,
This review is from: Best of Larry Graham & Graham Central Station 1 (Audio CD)
Larry Graham is one of the best bass players ever and my personal favorite. It is so evident when he left Sly to form his own group. Although I am a HUGE Sly fan as well, Larry Graham's bass was the heartbeat of the group and he used it to bring life to his own, Graham Central Station. GCS played some the the funkiest music, it's hard not to move when you're listening..."Release yourself" does just that...blows you out of your seat. Although this albumn contains some of his best cuts, it omits a lot of the goodies, but is good to have none the less. I have all his albumns (I'm dated) but wanted them on cd. Todays "music" if that's what you call it is sorely lacking. Talkin bout missin the "good ol days"......

Funk Pioneers,

From his days with Sly and the Family Stone, Larry Graham has been the consumate funkster! On his greatest hits, you get the whole spectrum... from "The Jam", which has one of the greatest funk bass hooks of all time, to "One in A Million You" which is balladeering at its best.
When it was originally released, "We've Been Waiting" seemed to be the musical segue for every R&B station in America. Although the group in its original incarnation was short lived, it left an indelible mark on 70's funk. This album is a good momento. Enjoy! "Some people listen to remember, some people listen to forget".

I would just have to say that after listening to this I fell in love all over again and always wondered why he wasn't considered the godfather of funk. And what that man could do with a bass should be obsence in many parts of the world. What a great group and I would say to anyone ready for some great music give him a listen. Still great after all these years.

Nothing other than these two words are necessary to describe the funkafied brilliance of Larry Graham.
It's kind of hard to rate a greatest hits collection on a 5 star scale, because in many ways, you're rating the artist's career at this point. In any case if you're short in the tooth, Mr. Graham was the bassist in Sly and the Family Stone's groundbreaking soul/funk/rock band that redefined the course of modern music - belee dat! He's widely credited with the invention of the slap bass style of bass playing and he milks it to perfection on The Jam. I didn't live through the Graham years and I try not to hold such cheesy ballads as One in a Million You against the man (brotha's gotta get paid now and then), so I really couldn't rate him overall as a 5-Star artist. However, 5 stars it is for The Jam that takes us through funkier and funkiest solos from each member of the band to a sizzling climax that has the whole organism grooving off each other by the time your 8 minutes is up. "Let me Play my Wums..." Check this out, dude. |
