not my idea of hot,

This review is from: Best Lesbian Erotica 2008 (Paperback)
I know everyone has different ideas of hot but this book left me feeling icky. I am not into most of what they write about and this is really a lot of semi violent woman on woman behavior which is not my idea of erotic. Seems like instead of using intelligence and wit they just came up with various objects to use. Kind of debasing. Skip this if you want hot steamy romance and passion.

I was expecting some more steam, but it was good. I skipped around a lot, so maybe it was chance, but it seems like they focus on a lot of butch girl and fem girl relationships. Not exactly what I was looking for. I was looking more for two women in love and experiencing lustful intimacy. This was more of one woman in the "guys" role while the other was the "woman". I would shop around a bit before settling onthis book.
p.s.I'm a woman

Lesbian-free Porn,
This review is from: Best Lesbian Erotica 2008 (Paperback)
If you like lesbian erotica thickly strewn with words like cock, boy, and Daddy, and devoid of any human warmth, you'll love this book.
If you're looking for stories of women loving women, keep looking! Reading this book left me feeling soiled and distressed. I tossed it without even finishing it. Perhaps even worse, considering its goal, is that it entirely failed to be steamy. It takes huge "poetic license" to call this lesbian erotica. It's neither. Save your money. I'd give it "zero stars" if the form allowed it.

I'm not terribly impressed, for the *opposite* reason of prior reviewers,

Apparently the earlier reviewers are second wave feminists who believe in gender essentialism and think that BDSM is violent abuse. For them, this erotic collection is distateful because it is full of lesbians who call themselves bois and like to spank one another. As an intersexed person who has gender transitioned and whose feminism is third-wave flavor, I found the erotica OK, but somewhat tedious. Yes, gender transgression is fun and has a long dykely history. Yes, sex can be fun when it's got an edge to it and doesn't take place in a field of pretty butterflies. But the kink and genderqueerity in this book tend to run in familiar, tame ruts. Use a strap-on and swagger? Then you're a boi. Wanna show you're edgy? Add some light D/s or a reference to some fetish like boot-blacking. For erotica to be truly engaging, it has to be inventive, at least for me, and this is genre fiction (albeit a genre second wave lesbian feminists find nasty). Furthermore, some problematic themes are pervasive. Transbois somehow get to be considered under the rubric "lesbian," while trans women, who actually ought to qualify, are noticeably absent. Women of color appear, but share the motivations and character traits and cultural frame of the white majority. Matters like these put me off my libidinal feed.
Still, I gave the book four stars, because it seems to deliver what lesbians in 2008 want, the other reviews notwithstanding. |
