Lightnin Hopkins expansive career spanned from the late 1920s through the 1980s, making him one of the most prolific bluesmen in the history of the genre. Beginning in the late 40s, Hopkins began spitting out hit singles for a number of different record labels, twisting an R&B Texas flavor to the familiar blues sound that was as traditional as it was brilliant. When a young upstart genre known as rock and roll began to change the musical landscape, Hopkins incorporated a more folksy, down-to-earth manner into his performances, which led to a ressurgence in his popularity, especially with the 60s Haight Ashbury crowd, and was even selected as the opening act for such bands as the Greateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. Hopkins kept on truckin through the 70s, and was much deservedly inducted into the Blues Foundation s Hall of Fame shortly before his passing in 1982.
