4.0 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories
I enjoyed watching this DVD - it brought back memories of watching the "House Party" TV show with my mom back in the 60's - probably on school vacation days. I don't really remember what the rest of the "House Party" show was about but the 'Kids Say the Darnest Things' segment was what I tuned in for. This DVD is funny although somewhat repetitious but even my teenager...

4.0 out of 5 stars Art is still the best!, November 29, 2005
This review is from: The Best of Art Linkletter's Kids Say the Darndest Things, vol 1. (DVD)
After playing this entire dvd, I must say I was charmed by Art, and his little talkers as well. Harking back to a simpler, more cordial time on Television, I highly recommend this example of what TV should strive to be: fun, yet mannerly, and containing a shining example of what a host SHOULD be on a talk forum--a listener, and not trying to take everything and make a one-line joke out of it, basically to be a good listener with a minimal ego. YOU HEAR THAT DAVID, JAY, CONAN, etc??? You will thoroughly enjoy this step-back with a fantastic gentleman host-Art Linkletter. I certainly hope they will produce many more of these, and I shall order them all too.

The year is 1968, the show is ART LINKLETTER'S HOUSE PARTY, and 'housewives' everywhere tuned in every afternoon to watch their favorite segment of that show called "Kids Say The Darndest Things".

If the above introduction to this review bothers your political correctness you may have some problems with this dated show. Girls are given seperate toys from the boys and have different expectations. Minorities are limited to a few Asian kids, Art & the audience laugh at one boy's bowl-haircut "Your Mom cuts your hair!". You will cringe when two seperate clips have Art asking the kids "Who would you rather get spanked by?", one child replies "My grandmother, because by Dad & Mon use a belt". That does bring an 'oh-boy' on Art's face but he moves on.

I did find the first 30 minutes very amusing, but then the remaining 90 minutes became routine with some bright moments. I found myself working on projects while listening to the show as a distraction.

I seem to remember better B&W clips from Art's earlier shows on other retrospective programs. Maybe Art is saving those for other volumes (a sticker indicates this is volume 1), but I feel no urge to see more. This is more than enough.

One un-expected high spot is the close-ups of the 1968 toys given as prizes! A two foot Mary Poppin's Doll for the girls would bring a good price on eBay today. The other toys brought back memories for me.

This best-of DVD is formatted as one 2 hour clip show with a new introduction by Art. There are some chapters to find the clips.

This show is in color, the old tapes are still in fairly good shape although the picture is soft.

I do wonder, now, what the entire "House Party" show was like as I only remember this segment.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good video, but a little under what we expected!, September 4, 2009
This review is from: The Best of Art Linkletter's Kids Say the Darndest Things, vol 1. (DVD)
It was cute, not as funny as I thought. I was a little disappointed, I gave it as a birthday present. My sister likes it but expected it to be funnier, from the previews they showed to sell it! I liked seeing the 60's clothes on the kids and the old fashioned toys, that have evolved so much now. It reminded me of old toys and things from my childhood. That was neat!

I love watching Art Linkletter. He is very quick and very witty with the kids! The kids are so spontaneous and sometimes goofy! You never know what kids will say when asked a question!

This collection of shows is wholesome and humorous. The prizes ranging from tape recorders to bikes are a real hoot. My kids, particularly enjoyed watching how other kids responded to the questions.

Quite often we forget the intelligence that kids have about the way in which life works and their part in it as well.

I laughed so much when I viewed this. I watched these shows when they were "live" on tv and, even now, I still laugh.

Kids still say the darndest things.

I received my order promptly. Thanks.
