I am not a fan of country music, but for some odd reason I have never been able to resist Dolly Parton's pretty voice. This is a unique role for such a sweet-natured lady, but she pulls it off just fine. The songs "Hard Candy Christmas" and "I Will Always Love You" show just how great Dolly is at singing. I also like the governor's song and the Aggie boys' naughty tune. You won't regret buying this cd. It is more fun than a barrell of hookers. A+

Best Little Country CD Ever,

This movie & this soundtrack are just two of the most exceptional things ever. The music from this movie perfectly captures the fun of the screen & Dolly's great presence & chemistry with Burt Reynolds. The cd captures old Texas from the honky tonk of 20 fans (totally uplifting) to Dolly's fine performances of Little Bitty Pissant Country Place to that Classic I Will Always Love you - still gives me shivers. Her voice is so sincere. There's a fantastically catchy duet with Burt called Sneakin Around. 3 other highlights are The Watchdog song - one of the movie's funniest moments, then hilarious Sidestep (the ooohs are funny). Proabaly the stealer for me is Hard Candy Christmas. One of the movie's most poignant moments & I am getting shivers as I'm typing. The harmonies are sooo good. This movie holds special memories for me & I love watching my mum laugh as she watches it (she's been a Dolly fan since pussy was a kitten). This cd gives me a synopsis of the fun & pleasure that the movie has given me ove rthe past 20 years & just reminds you how fun Dolly Parton is.

In 1982, when this film was released, I had just graduated from high school. Just last week (April of 2002!), I finally watched the film from beginning to end. I LOVED IT!!! This soundtrack is an amazing addition to this wonderful film. Dolly and Burt are perfect together, and Dom is hysterical as the over-zealous crusader! This CD is perfect if you need a quick pick-me-up on your drive in to work, or even to help you forget your lousy day on your drive home. Buy it! Listen to it! And most of all....ENJOY it!!!

Album was slightly different from the film's songs.,

Being that the movie is one of my all-time favorites, I can pretty easily spot differences and glitches in the music and cinematography (if any). Which is why I've noticed the similarities and differences between the soundtrack album and the film itself. For example, the song "Little Ol' Bitty Pissant Country Place," (in the film) there are only two main verses to the song, but in the album, there are THREE! There is only one explanation that I can think of for this: during editing of the film for theatrical release, the ORIGINAL second verse of the song was decidely cut from the original film's negative.

I have to say that I really enjoyed the simplicity of the movie and the music. There was just some kinda quality in Hard Candy Christmas that just hits home. I am a fan of musical of various types, but this one is one of my all time favorites, (even though I am no fan of Burt Reynolds). I won't let that interfere with my enjoyment of Miss Dolly and the rest of the cast. In fact, I guess I have to admit that ole Burty Boy did fit the part well also.

The HUGE problem with this soundtrack....,

It has always irked me that instead of including the MOVIE version of Hard Candy Christmas in which ALL whorehouse girls share lead vocals on individual lines (the true MOVIE SOUNDTRACK version), a gorgeous moment in an otherwise wacky film, they included a Dolly Parton SOLO LEAD version on this soundtrack which just loses the whole point of the song's use in the movie. In fact, a true homage to the way the song was presented in the film was recorded on the RUPAUL christmas CD, in which (s)he SHARES the lines with a gaggle of her favorite fag hags--of course, that version is total camp.

In 1982 Dolly starred in only her second motion picture alongside Burt Reynolds in "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas". The film was a commercial success which led to the success of the soundtrack which went to #5 on the Country Album Chart and #63 Pop. Two singles were released from this collection: the first being Dolly's remake of her classic 1974 song "I Will Always Love You" (#1 country making Dolly the only performer in the history of country music to have the same song go to #1 twice; it also went to #53 pop and has a more pop sounding flavor, and Carol Hall's "Hard Candy Christmas" (#8 country).Dolly wrote about 20 songs for the soundtrack, but only one was used, "Sneakin' Around With You", her duet with Burt Reynolds. The other gem here is Dolly's performance on "A Little O Bitty Pissin' Country Place" that drag queens still perform to this day. The rest of the soundtrack is pretty much forgettable, but overall this is a nice collection for fans of soundtracks to films and fans of Dolly's.

"Sidestep" by Charles Durning is a classic. The song always conjures the image of him strutting around the rotunda of the Texas State capitol singing and dancing. And what a comment on politics and politicians!
"Hard Candy Christmas" is a GORGEOUS song, but I agree with the lead review which suggests the movie version should have been included with this CD instead of Dolly's solo performance. The whole purpose of this song was to illustrate that all the women in that whorehouse had lived a hard life. "I Will Always Love You" is a gorgeous ballad. It's a little over the top for me, but still one of the best musical performances on the CD. The rest is cute and I'd consider it filler.

I just recently saw this movie and LOVED IT. It is really a fun, energetic musical and very entertaining.I went right out and bought the original broadway cast version. That one is good, but Dolly Parton is the best Miss Mona of the 3 versions available. Although several songs from the broadway show are left out, the best ones are included ."Sneakin Around" is my favorite one and this one is not in the broadway version. This is definetly the one to get and if you are a big fan you might like the others.Personally I didnt likethe way Ann Margret's voice soundedand the original broadway version wasnt as fun. Both of them lack the energy Dolly Parton can easily bring through the music.
