3.0 out of 5 stars great under-played soul, February 10, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Best Of Loma Records: The Rise And Fall Of A 1960's Soul Label (Audio CD)
this disc is a lot of fun - especially for a couple of really great ike @ tina tracks that i'd never heard before ("just to be with you", "tell her i'm not home"), and while the compilation does resort to using filler to pack in two discs of material (thus the 3 star rating), there are about ten excellent tracks on here that any soul music fan may not have heard and would love to have. my favorites are as follows: "rainin' in my heart" by the olympics, "don't hold on to someone" by lukas lollipop, an excellent version of "a change is gonna come" by roy redmond, "try" by lorraine ellison (not sure if this is the original version or not but it's great), "i'm the lover man" by little jerry williams, "hypnotized" by linda jones, "who would want me now" by the apollas, and of course "but it's alright" by jj jackson, plus the cool ike & tina tracks. these songs are easily worth the 20 bucks the disc will cost you, especially the amazing slow songs, and "but it's alright" was the only song i already owned. so if you want to hear some under-played soul songs that will definitely make you smile and don't mind skipping through some filler to find them, pick up this disc right away...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection of Little Known Soul!, June 4, 2001

It's an interesting commenatry on the quality of 60 Soul that there were so many great records that didn't get the attention they deserved while many of today's tunes wouldn't have made it as frisbees! "I Paid For the party" by the Enchanters, "You're Absolutely Right" by the Apollas, "Somewhere Somebody Loves You" and "What Have I Done To Make You Mad" by Linda Jones should have all been major hits, but at least we have them here to enjoy! For an interesting companion piece, check "The Blue Rock Records Story" for more classics for Little-Known Soul.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent 60s soul, January 18, 2000
This review is from: The Best Of Loma Records: The Rise And Fall Of A 1960's Soul Label (Audio CD)
Let's face the years of Loma Records (64-68) were soul music's prime years. They may not have had many hits, but they were a Warner Brothers subsidiary, and the records were well-written and well-produced. Possibly Warner Brothers, not having the right connections to promote black music, didn't know what to do with this music. Anyway, this is classic stuff - not to be missed for the true 60s soul collector.
