High-powered big band,
By
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
Louie Bellson, one of the all-time great drummers, leads a knockout big band in this 1980 recording. Arrangements are great, the band is tight, and Bellson's drumming, as always, is both tasteful and virtuosic. It's an all-star effort. The especially phenomenal trumpet section includes such legends as Cat Anderson, Bobby Shew, Blue Mitchell, and Snooky Young. Highlights include an incredible (and lengthly!) high-note trumpet solo (presumably Cat Anderson) on "Intimacy of the Blues" and tons of solo space for Bellson on "Niles Blues" My only complaint is that there are no liner notes. I would have liked to know who was playing each solo throughout the album.
