Outstanding job by Sony on the Restoration,

This review is from: The Best of Louis Armstrong: The Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings (Audio CD)
Louis Armstrong's early work is copiously documented and is quite rightly as readily available as such other early recording giants as Caruso. These recordings were not, however, as widely available as the Victors Caruso made in the two prior decades, and because of this the sound has always been subject to the vicissitudes of the condition of the originals being used to make the CD transfer. In the present case Sony has outdone itself with exemplary work, these sound to me quite the best versions of these performances I have yet heard.
If you know and like these works well enough to try another version then this CD should be something you will enjoy. Unlike the case with old opera recordings, which I know better, I don't have any of the originals of these, so I'm curious to see what other reviewers who are fortunate enough to be able to compare the CD with the originals think.

For those interested in owning historically significant recordings of early jazz, this CD is indespensible. I bought it to use in college music appreciation courses I teach. The sound quality will amaze you.
