My Favorite Childhood Book!,

This review is from: The Best-Loved Doll (An Owlet Book) (Paperback)
I still have the 1962 paperback edition and the pages are so brittle. I get all choked up reading it to my own daughter now, as I used to when my mother read it to me. It is 30 pages and tells the tender story of a girl named Betsy and her decision to bring her Best-Loved doll to a party. It is a doll that has seen better days. She had many other choices, but she followed her heart. Moral: True beauty is on the inside. I treasure this book as much as Betsy does her doll.

This book is about a girl named Betsy who took her doll to a party. All the other girls at the party had nicer or prettier dolls, but it didn't matter to Betsy. She loved her doll more than the other girls. She didn't care that her doll wasn't the prettiest, or the best dressed. A very beautiful and heartfelt story.

I had no idea so many other people had read this book as a child! I have a daughter now and couldn't find my original copy, which I know is buried somewhere in my basement. I was thrilled when I found the listing. Seeing the front cover again brought tears to my eyes. I love this book and can't wait to share it with my little girl!

Friendship, Love and Loyalty - not showing off and making an impression,
By Sparky Lee (Minnesota) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Best-Loved Doll (An Owlet Book) (Paperback)
I am delighted to add this book to my daughters' library. It's a sweet, kind, tender book about a little girl and her difficult decision to bring a tried & true, very loved doll to a party, even though she has several others which would be sure to impress her friends and win her a prize. This book has no sassy behavior, no inappropriate words, just a gentle story about love and loyalty and being a good, kind friend. It is slightly longer and slower moving than your average picture book, and the pictures are black & white with only a magenta fill, but my three girls (ages 8, 4 & 2) were absolutely captivated and delighted by the story. In this world of Facebook and the Kardashians, I'm thrilled to give my girls a book that teaches the value of loyalty and friendship over showing off and impressing others.

Every little girl should get this book!,
This review is from: The Best-Loved Doll (An Owlet Book) (Paperback)
As a child, this was one of my favorite books. It teaches the very valuable lesson of love and caring despite what the object of that love looks like. I only regret that I can't buy it in the hardcover version because it's a keeper!

This was one of my most favorite books when I was very young - and I can't believe that's 30 years ago! I wasn't able to fin this for my niece when she was small, but now I am getting it for my boyfriend's cousin's daughter - she is only 2 but I don't want to "miss it" again! I am also getting myself another copy for the memories!

A Pleasure for little girls everywhere!,

This review is from: The Best-Loved Doll (Turtleback)
I have been looking for this book for my daughter because it was clearly my very favorite book when I was a child. The description of the other dolls in the book and all of their individual attributes sent my imagination reeling. I also remember learning how to find beauty in all things from reading this book. A must read for girls everywhere!

I loved this book as a child and could not for the life of me remember the title. Due to your wonderful reviews, the lists, and the search capability of Amazon, I found it!!! Now I can pass this book on to my young nieces who are at the perfect age to read it. This is such a wonderful book for little girls. Dolls and other playthings are like live little things with feelings. This book just captures that. A true classic. ...

Every little girl who loves dolls SHOULD have this book.,

This review is from: The Best-Loved Doll (An Owlet Book) (Paperback)
I never really played with my battery-powered dolls; it was always the rag dolls, the soft and squishy dolls that I loved to bits. Sometimes they looked loved, too. A certain half bald Raggedy Andy doll comes to mind. For dolls those patches and scratches and matts in their hair are something akin to wrinkles for people---a sign of a life that's lived. These "played with" dolls have the most soul. And THAT is what this book is about. I loved, loved, loved this book as a child. I love it still as an adult. Any little girl who loves dolls will almost definitely have some favorite ones...and she will understand this book. She will understand this heroine. And through those eyes, the story is not a story about dolls, but love. And who wouldn't want to reinforce that?

This is a nice story, similar to the "Velveteen Rabbit" that shows how the most loved and valued toys aren't necessarily the prettiest, newest or fanciest. Here, Betsy has several dolls and must choose one to take to a doll party, where there will be prizes. She chooses to take her worn and old but very much loved doll to the party, rather than a newer or prettier doll that would very likely win a prize. The story of how Betsy chooses the doll to take to the party, and what happens at the party, is very sweetly told, without any of the gory elements present in some other books that deal with this theme (for example, Rumer Godden's "The Dolls House" or even "Velveteen Rabbit", both of which involve old toys getting burned). Because of the lack of disturbing elements, this book is great for very young readers. I loved it myself when I was a little girl of five or so.
