Best compilation so far,
By
This review is from: Best of Mac Davis (Audio CD)
This compilation of the multi-media artist Mac Davis is the best to appear so far. While often thought of as a country artist, much of his material was more pop-oriented. Many of his recordings charted higher pop than country.
This collection of twenty tracks contains most of his hits but is limited to his Columbia recordings and contains none of his output from his Casablanca years such as 1980's "It's Hard To Be Humble". Sound quality is very good with all tracks in true stereo. Included is an eight-page booklet with a brief musical history, track details and a few pics. Not comprehensive but this new collection takes the top honors as a Davis compilation among those to appear so far.

When it comes to music; (whether it was one year ago or fourty or more years ago) I always remember a remarkable talent and Mac Davis is one of those artists with a remarkable talent and most of the musical talent that I am familiar with and enjoy as a fan;( whether it is Mac Davis, Keith Urban, etc ) there is one particular song by that artist that is a favorite of mine and sometimes that favorite song can be very hard to find; especially when it charted in 1970. When it comes to Mac Davis; that song just happens to be the beautiful, Whoever Finds This; I Love You. Some time ago I purchased Mac's, A Golden Classics Edition, CD and that ballad is on it HOWEVER it did not sound like the version I remember so I kept searching and the search stopped right here. This, The Best Of Mac Davis, CD has the beautiful instrumental version of, Whoever Finds This; I Love You, I was looking for. I also noticed that Mac's inspirational, Stop And Smell The Roses, versions are different on these two CDs with this version also being the one I remember and prefer. I love both Disc's but this is the one I listen to mostly.
This CD also has the landmark classics, Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me, One Hell Of A Woman, and, Rock N Roll ( I Gave You The Best Years Of My Life ), on it also and I can relate to that last song somewhat; even though I am just a fan. Mac's talent also shines here as he sings the gorgeaus ballads, Forever Lovers, I'll Paint You A Song, and the very uplifting and inspirational, ( If You Add ) All The Love In The World. Mac has a Children's Chorus backing him up on that one.....Fantastic. Also being an extremely talented songwriter; Mac also wrote classic tunes for other artists including Elvis Presley. Three of them he wrote for Elvis are the timeless classics, In The Ghetto, Memories, and, Don't Cry Daddy, and Mac sings his own version of, In The Ghetto, on this CD. He is one of the great ones and my advise to you is if you want the instrumental version of, Whoever Finds This; I Love You, and the better version of, Stop And Smell The Roses, (at least it is to me) purchase this one or do like I did and purchase both this one and the, Golden Classics Edition, because there are very few duplicates between both and like I stated above; two of the duplicates are different versions anyway. I purchased this Disc from Amazon on March 4th of 2005 and it definitely doesn't accumalate any dust. It is that great !

First Love-still going strong,

Brilliant song writer, excellent singer, and not a bad actor!! He was my first crush at 7 yrs old and I still adore him. From his writing success of "In the Ghetto" for Elvis (the original rock God) to his current success as an actor on the series "Rodney"--(by the way, he's not dead by choking on a ham sandwich, I believe that was the Mama Cass "rumor"). I would love to hear a new releases CD, even though the greatest hits is great. Maybe he could title the new release, "Ballads from Beyond the Grave"!!

GREAT! but HELP!,
This review is from: Best of Mac Davis (Audio CD)
Great! Love them all...but having hard time getting ahold of one of his older album/tape/CD...the original "Rear View" with songs you never see anywhere, Remember When (Beverly's Song), Me and Fat Boy, Hot Texas Night, Sad Songs, Hello Hollywood and the best "In The Eyes Of My People". It was put out by Casablanca, 1981, and Blitz in 2003. These songs cover the time I was growing up in Texas and starting out on my own. Any HELP! would be greatly appreciated...jerry

This is far better than the "Greatest Hits" collection from the past. The selection for me is all the top songs that I have enjoyed on the lp records that I still have. The only additional song that I would liked to have seen included is "The Way You Look Today" which got very little airplay but is a great song.
Mac Davis is still alive and well and just turned 69 earlier this month. The reviewer, "Idahostreet" is wrong about his death choking on a ham sandwich in a Paris hotel.

Bought this cd to share with my granddaughter. So many of Mac's good songs. She's a fan now; as her granny always has been. He was a genuinely nice personality. His "Hard to Be Humble" has brought us many laughs and "Watching Scotty Grow" describes a parent's joy in raising a child. You can feel the love and awe. "Stop and Smell the Roses" has a message for all of us. Would love to hear how Mac is spending his time these days....

First of all, the person who thought that Rhinestone Cowboy and Convoy should have been on ANY of Mac Davis' albums, is an idiot!!!Rhinestone Cowboy was sung by Glen Campbell and Convoy was done by C.W. McCall. I have his "Stop and smell the roses" album and love it. I was raised on his songs and they will be in my heart forever!!!!

Is there a fan club contact for Mac? He is still living, yes? I remember his #1 hit, "Don't get hooked on me". I loved the song and the tune. (I was born in 1964, so unfortunately I don't remember all of the songs.) My mother, Judy, told me with pride when I was young, that her brother, Bill and Mr. Davis were very good friends when they were living in Lubbock, TX. I would like to get in touch with Mr. Davis about my uncle. I also agree, that it would be nice to hear his music as well as others from his "era" on the radio again.
