5.0 out of 5 stars The Best
I saw The Best Man of Grass Creek when it premiered in Indiana. What a breath of fresh air. This is a movie with an old-fahioned love theme in the styles of the 1950s movies. It's clean, wholesome and thoroughly enjoyable! Set in a rural Indiana farm setting, the characters are real and captured my heart. 3.0 out of 5 stars A Customer Who Lives Near Grass Creek
I missed this movie when it came to the local theaters and was glad to see it come out on video. I live near Grass Creek, about four miles from the town and also the church at Fletcher's Lake that was used in the movie. I thought the movie was good overall, it did show how life is around Grass Creek. The story concept was excellent and amusing. It is a film that families...

I found myself humming the tune all the way home. This movie keeps you wondering what's around the corner. Never a dull moment. DEFINITELY a must see movie. Enjoy!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming, Uplifting and Side-splitting!, September 28, 2001
By
L Wuthrich (South Bend, IN USA) - See all my reviews
First of all, let me just say that you may think me a bit bias, as I was lucky enough to be an extra in this film (for about 2 seconds.) However, all that was revealed about the movie was that it was based on the true story of a man who, after getting stood up at the alter, could no longer "stomach" attending wedding cermonies, but somehow gets roped into another one.

I missed every preview and was heartbroken not to see my "film debut," but finally saw the movie at a local theater as a paying customer.

As I watched the film, it became clear that my part in the production was over in the first 2 minutes of the movie (meaning I still have approximately 13 minutes of fame to look forward to.) The rest of the story was all new to me.

It was the best money I've ever spent. The portrayal of the heart of Hoosiers, even in the simplest of settings, was very true to life. Also, the way our "low delight level" was presented throughout the story just goes to show how happy we, as people, can be when surrounded by, well, mostly nothing but land and each other.

I truly believe that this is a film that would be great for all Americans to see. The recent events of Sept. 11th have opened many peoples' eyes as to what is really important in life, and that is exactly what this film portrays!

It truly is a film coming in to its own time. It shows us all how we can laugh at ourselves and each other...together!

More importantly, it shows that we can all get along with each other, help each other, and learn from each other no matter where we are from; and that if you can't do that, you need to look inside yourself, identify your fears and face them. What a lesson!

5.0 out of 5 stars Grass Creek Pastor loves movie, June 18, 2002
This review is from: Best Man in Grass Creek [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I am the present pastor of Grass Creek United Methodist Church. It's the only church in Grass Creek, Indiana. I came after the filming was completed. The movie was shot on several locations in our area. The church used was actually Fletcher's Lake UMC because of it's location. The movie was wonderful! Many of our own locals were featured and we enjoyed viewing the movie with some who acted in it. They gave us background information. This is a movie that the whole family can enjoy. I can't wait to get my copy. I'm sorry it didn't do better in the theaters. It should win an award. My son is a film studies student at IU and said it was one of the best films he's seen in a long time. Kudos to all who were involved.

5.0 out of 5 stars from grass creek area, May 26, 2002

I grew up near Grass Creek. Yes there really is a real town called Grass Creek. I was thrilled to get to see all the local people I grew up knowing, in this movie. Including my mom, two aunts, brother, the Pastor of our home church(the guy with the grin on his face that worked at the Indianapolis Star who tried to out do Adam)and a variety of other people. It is a great movie. I appreaciate the wholesomeness of it,it's a family film. I was dissappointed that it didn't do as well as "The John's" had hoped it would. I thank them for giving us a wonderful film to take our families to see. It is so very funny. Including the boar's head on the our church wall and Dave with his goofy grin running through the hot coals, or Chris's cows eating the wedding cake. This also gave the community something great to do and anticipate. They all had a ball filming this movie. THANKS FOR A GREAT MOVIE>>>>

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome home!!, August 3, 2001
When I first saw that this movie was coming to theatres I was so excited! Not only am I a huge indy film fan, but I am an Indiana girl as well, right in the heart of the nation. The Best Man in Grass Creek is set in, well, Grass Creek, Indiana (a real place, it's about an hour from my hometown) and is the story of a man afraid of commitment and the crazy but comforting people he meets along the way.

In this touching story Adam (John Newcombe, writer/director) agrees to be the best man on a moments notice for a man he hardly knows in order to sell a comic strip to the Indianapolis Star. Adam has a horrible fear of weddings since he was left standing at the alter a few years before. Set in the gorgeous farmland country, the viewer gets an exaggerated look at the life of "country folk" and the strength each character holds, and gets the chance to see a man overcome his fears and embrace his future.

A definite must see...

5.0 out of 5 stars "Afraid" of Marriage? Watch this movie!, July 31, 2002
This review is from: Best Man in Grass Creek [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This marvelous gem deals with one man's battle with his devastating past and his ensuing "marriage-phobia." Charming, funny, and well-acted, I recommend this movie to anyone, but especially to people who never seem to get around to popping the question.

After all, you don't want to become a Lester.....

3.0 out of 5 stars A Customer Who Lives Near Grass Creek, August 5, 2002

I missed this movie when it came to the local theaters and was glad to see it come out on video. I live near Grass Creek, about four miles from the town and also the church at Fletcher's Lake that was used in the movie. I thought the movie was good overall, it did show how life is around Grass Creek. The story concept was excellent and amusing. It is a film that families can enjoy together. The extras they used in the film are neighbors, school teachers, pastors, etc and their relatives that I knew from living there all of my life. Unfortunately, they picked the people who are 'normal' as extras. I could have directed them to some real 'characters' that I know that would have spruced it up similar to Chevy Chase's Funny Farm or Andy Griffith's Mayberry (The bride's brothers were the closest to the real McCoy). The gravy eating scene used brown gravy and pork. The standard around here is white country sausage gravy over homemade biscuits and home fried potatoes. Most of the farmers here spend the morning in the coffee shop telling jokes and stories while eating a big platter of it.
While watching the film you will get the most out of it if you look at the details in the background,(the houses, the buildings, and the scenery) because it is all real and not a made-up set.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a good film made by good people for good people., July 18, 2002

This review is from: Best Man in Grass Creek [VHS] (VHS Tape)
First of all, let me say that I'm fed up with movies today. I hate all the sex, nudity, cussing, sin, glorification of self, and horrible morals and values that are shoved down our throats in every film.
This film has none of those. I believe this is a good movie made by good people for good people. I thought it was hilarious, wholesome, and one of the best movies I've ever seen. Even though it was low-budget, it was still undeniably professional. It may have a word or two in it that I don't care for, but I'm not certain because it's been over a year since I last saw it. But my overall impression of it was unbelievably better than American Pie (1 or 2), Half Baked, any Tom Green movie, Scary Movie, etc; even though I admit to not seeing most of these.
If your tired of all the sin in the world, this movie will give you an overwhelming breath of fresh air. Praise the Lord for films like these!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great movie, June 18, 2002

This review is from: Best Man in Grass Creek (DVD)
This was one of the funniest movies I have seen in years. It is a great family film, with no violence. It takes one back to the old days of moviemaking, wher the actors and the dialogue really made the film. Living in the Midwest, this movie is a must for fellow midwesterners, as it pokes fun at all of us in a good way. I cannont recommend this movie high enough
