Biography

It’s been nearly forty years since Tim Hauser, a former Madison Avenue marketing executive, paid his bills by driving a New York City cab while aspiring to form a harmony vocal quartet sui generis that could authentically embrace varied musical styles, and still create something wholly unique in the field of American popular song.

Hauser had been in doo-wop groups, folk groups, and ... Read more in Amazon's The Manhattan Transfer Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! August 1, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is the first Manhattan Transfer cd I've bought, and it's absolutely outstanding! Their vocal blend blows my mind. I got it in a used cd store, and why anyone would have given it up is beyond me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quickly Became My Favourite CD January 6, 2004
Format:Audio CD
Since buying this CD for the bargain of $4 recently, I have listened to it daily and never tired of it.
The amazing harmonies, some pop tunes, a swing number, some jazzy songs with great band accompaniment are great.
My favourite songs are:
Java Jive
Operator
Birdland
A Nightingale Sang In Berkely Square
Four Brothers
Candy
Gloria
Body and Soul
Tuxedo Junction
Boy From New York City
Except for the exception of "Twilight Zone", a pretty awful song with cheeseball introduction that is very bad in comparison with the other wonderful tracks, this CD is very good. I am not a fan of live recordings, and Tuxedo Junction is live, but still good.

5.0 out of 5 stars ......Wow...... That is all I have to say. August 11, 2006
A Kid's Review
Format:Audio CD
My family had only this album of the Manhattan transfer for a long time, and recently bought another one, but this is the one I fell in love with. I love the front cover, I adore the picture on the CD, but most of all, I love the music. This is a GREAT addition to any collection of their songs or of jazz, and an awesome introduction to the marvelous group known as Manhattan Transfer.

My favorite songs on this CD are: Birdland, Tuxedo Junction, Twighlight Zone, and Trickle Trickle.

(Heh, as if you wanted to know about some random person who uses the internet)

3.0 out of 5 stars Early Formulaic Treatment Of A "Best Of" Album July 30, 2007
Format:Audio CD
I love the music of this talented Jazz vocal harmony group from NY City (Tim Hauser, Alan Paul, Janis Siegel and Laurel Masse, with the latter replaced in 1979 by Cheryl Bentyne) who had already logged these 5 nationally charting singles when the original LP (Atlantic SD 19319) represented by this CD first appeared in 1981: Operator - a # 22 Billboard Pop Hot 100/# 34 Adult Contemporary (AC) in Nov-Dec 1975 b/w Tuxedo Junction on Atlantic 3292; Chanson D'Amour, their Jan-Feb 1977 # 16 AC cover of the 1958 Art & Dotty Todd # 6 Hot 100 b/w Popsicle Toes on Atlantic 3374; Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone - # 30 Hot 100 April-May 1980 b/w Body And Soul on Atlantic 3649; Trickle Trickle, their Dec 1980 # 73 Hot 100 cover of the non-charting 1959 Doo-Wop selection by The Videos b/w Foreign Affair on Atlantic 3772; and The Boy From New York City, their June-July 1981 # 4 AC/# 7 Hot 100 cover of the 1965 Ad Libs # 8 Hot 100 hit b/w (The Word Of) Confirmation on Atlantic 3816.

So, at the time of the release of the LP titled "The Best Of" it might have been reasonable for fans to expect to see, in a 12-track album, all 10 sides plus 3 culled from their 6 Atlantic albums to that point. After all, these were the sides that brought them some measure of fame by making it onto the various national singles charts through air- and juke-box play and record sales and that was, when you get rigt down to it, the goal of both artist and label when releasing singles in the days of the 78- and then 45-rpm discs.

But no, they opted to leave out Foreign Affair and (The Word Of) Confirmation - the latter only the flip of their best hit ever - as well as both sides of Chanson D'Amour and Popsicle Toes.

It's a varied collection from the lyrical version of "Birdland" (gorgeous jazz) to "Twilight Zone" (just a little warped). This is a listenable CD and one that's worth adding to your collection. I originally had this collection on vinyl and recently replaced it as I was aware it was available on CD. Good stuff and a fun CD to just put on.
