Doesn't work miracles,

I purchased this item based on a review at cooksillustrated-dot-com (search for keyword "retrogradation" if you want to know more). Cooksillustrated thought this product was the best of the lot they tested and said it'd keep homemade bread crusts crisp and the loaf fresh for up to three days. The claim that crusts would stay crisp especially interested me.
The bag doesn't work miracles and disappointingly, doesn't keep crusts crisp. Compared to leaving my homemade or store-bought artisanal bread in a leaky plastic box, there was a small but definite improvement in quality on day one after baking/purchasing, but the crusts are definitely not crisp. By day three (just as the cooks illustrated article says) you need to freeze the bread and reheat it. It's somewhat hard to clean b/c there are all sorts of folds in which crumbs can be trapped. You're supposed to be able to put it in the washing machine or dishwasher. Mine survived the washing machine (in a lingerie bag), but the moisture trapped between the plastic bag and the cloth bag is hard to get rid of (hair dryer time). If your family is like mine, polishing off your homemade bread within a day or two of baking, this bag will help maintain freshness. I give it 3.5 stars for performance (on day one after baking, 4 stars for freshness, but 0 on the crisp crust promise) and 2 stars for being wildly overpriced (see my image in the customer image gallery).

A space saver - Very good product,

The Pros:
- You can stand the bag (with the bread inside) on its end and it will only take ~6 sq. in. of counter/cupboard space. - Keeps bread fresh. - Keeps bread soft. - Very easy to use. - Good quality heavy fabric and plastic. - It's roomy (designed for bread machine loaves). - Very well made. Cons: None. ----------- I've read comments from some people who complain about their crusty bread going soft in the bag. Well, that **always** happens when you put crusty bread in a plastic bag! This bag is lined with plastic. This bag keeps my home-made 100% whole wheat bread fresh and soft for five days (that's how long a loaf will last us, anyway).

This bag is plastic lined and closes with velcro straps after folding the end over once. It doesn't seem to be a tight seal, but nevertheless, the bread stays fresh. I make my own bread and oftentimes the loaf would not fit into a standard bread bag. This bag accomodates my bread loaves with ease. I generally cook two loaves at a time. I'm purchasing a second bag now.

Works great, but check inside frequently!,
This review is from: Best Manufacturers Reusable Bread Storage Bag (Kitchen)
This seems like common sense... but I didn't check inside the back frequently enough. I would toss the loaf in (tight squeeze for 2lb. loaf) and then shake the crumbs out when we were done with the bread. Well, the plastic creases in the base of the bag filled with crumbs and became very moldy. Really gross. So, now after each use I turn the bag inside out, fold open all the creases (not so easy to do) and get all the crumbs out. Not that big of a deal at all, but worth noting.

I really like this bag and use it all the time. When I buy bread I usually get potato bread and it lasts and lasts for days in this bag without molding.
When I make bread it is long enough that the loaves fit well. It is washable and very well-made.

I wanted this to have something to store my bread in to keep it fresh, and this fits the bill. Frequently, the bag the bread comes in can become ripped or punctured...then what do you do? This is great because it's reusable, it's remarkably well-made, and appears heavy duty. All in all I am quite happy with this purchase. Maybe I need to get another one for a back up bag, when this one wears out, or for use in the freezer.

Doesn't fit 13" Pain de Mie (Pullman) loaves, but keeps bread fresh,

I recently starting baking my own sandwich bread in my 13" pullman loaf pan. I searched high and low for a bag or container where I could store a full 13" uncut loaf and seeing this product, figured I finally found the product, being 17" long.
I think they mean they use 17" of fabric to make this bag (including hems and cinching). If I put a cooled loaf inside, I have maybe a 1/2" at the end, which is no where near enough fabric needed to roll up the end and close. I was very bummed to discover this, so my search continues. For now, with a full loaf I put in the bag and try to cover the end as much as possible, then place vertically on the counter with the open end down. For smaller loaves, this bag would work great. As for freshness otherwise, this bag performs very well. Once we start cutting into the loaf, it can be rolled up and closed. The bread does stay fresh for several days. I live in New England, and this summer has been very warm 85+ degrees and very humid. We use AC minimally. I have not had any mold growth on my bread despite it being wrapped in this bag on the counter for about 4 days. 4 days is the max the loaf lasts in this house (because it is eaten, not stale or gross). I've been using these bags for about 6+ weeks now. It keeps the loaves moist and tasty. It is made of a heavy duty material and thicker plastic - a resourceful person could probably make this, but I can't sew to save my life. Overall I recommend it, but it won't cover a full fresh 13" loaf of bread. Tips: ~DO NOT store home-made bread in the fridge. This WILL actually make your bread go bad faster than it would by sitting out on a counter in a poorly wrapped bag (it's been proven). ~Wait until loaf is COMPLETELY COOLED before storing in (any) bread bag. If it is still warm, it can produce steam that will get trapped in the bag and this will cause mold to grow. ~When closing, push out any excess air before rolling and closing with the velcro strap. ~Shake out excess crumbs between uses. I've never had any mold growth, but I shake it out because any bread or crumbs sitting in a bag over an extended period of time will mold, and I don't want moldy crumbs anywhere near my freshly baked loaf.

Great Bread Bag, Made in USA!,

These bags are great for what they do. I've been making my own loaves for a couple months now. They have kept my loaves fresh until I finish them which is a week and a half to two weeks. Amazon's description says that these are made in China. The product says that they are actually made in the USA. Something Amazon should consider fixing.
These bags are basically a sort of polyester or nylon outside, and there's a thicker clear plastic on the inside. These are also washable and seem fairly durable. The only thing I'd fix about these is that the velcro strips can sometimes be a little short when the bag is rolled up.

This product fills the bill for me. I bake artisinal bread in standard loaf sizes which fit the bag just fine. I can see where some reviewers' comments about the bag being too small for bread machine loaves might be valid but, since a bread machine is not my style, the bag works well for me. The velcro closure straps are a nice feature and you can shorten the bag to fit the loaf as it gets used up. I think the bag is a bit overpriced but will likely place an order for another one as soon as I get enough merchandise lined up to get that great Super Saver Shipping from Amazon.
