This review is from: The Best of Marv Johnson: You Got What it Takes (Audio CD)
For the three years between 1959 to 1961, Marv Johnson had 9 songs on the pop chart.
All of them are here, plus 5 b-sides. There were 7 b-sides total, as one release was a 2-sided hit. His hits and b-sides that are here are: 1. "Come to me" b/w "Whisper" -- 1959 pop top 40, r&b top 10. 2. "I'm coming home" b/w (missing, "River of tears") -- 1959 pop top 100, r&b almost made the top 20. 3. "You got what it takes" b/w "Don't leave me" -- 1959 pop top 10, r&b top 10. 4. "I love the way you love" b/w "Let me love you" -- 1960 pop top 10, r&b top 10. 5. "All the love I've got" (b-side is #6) -- 1960 top 100, didn't make r&b. 6. "Ain't gonna be that way" -- 1960 top 100, didn't make r&b. 7. ("You've got to) move two mountains" b/w (missing "I need you") -- 1960 pop top 20, r&b nearly a top 10. 8. "Happy days" b/w "Baby baby" -- 1960, pop top 100, r&b top 10. 9. "Merry-go-round" b/w "Tell me that you love me" -- 1961 pop top 100, r&b top 40. (Johnson had one additional song make the top 40 r&b in 1966, -- "I miss you baby (how I miss you)" b/w "Just the way you are", neither side of that record is here.) There's not much to be found of Johnson's 3 year singing career, but in that time he had some very good music. This is a great compilation of original recordings which includes all nine charted songs, 5 of the 7 b-sides, 9 albums tracks, and the last song "Thats all I want", previously unreleased. If you like the rock and roll -- rhythm and blues sound of the early sixties, you're sure to like this anthology collection. It comes with a 6 page booklet with details of Johnson's career, and his discography. Marv Johnson is recognized as a co-creator of the Motown sound with Berry Gordy. This compilation is EMI Legends of Rhythm and Blues Series, in 1992. Manufactured by Capitol Records, a subsidiary of Capitol/EMI Music. Hollywood, California. |
