Unmistakeable Ian Matthews, good tunes & good memories, April 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Best of Matthews Southern Comfort featuring Ian Matthews (Audio CD)
Iam disappointed that "Morgan the Pirate" is not on this CD! I believe this was his best recording and the CD is incomplete with it missing. For this reason I gave the CD only 4 stars. It is great to hear "Woodstock" and "Southern Comfort" again, why these tunes do not get air time is beyond me.

For Your Best Version Of Woodstock, May 31, 2006
This review is from: Best of Matthews Southern Comfort featuring Ian Matthews (Audio CD)
I am not a real folk rock fan. That being said, Ian Matthews' version of Woodstock is one of the best mellower songs ever recorded and even if I don't love a lot of his songs, I never find them abrasive either.
I personally wish he would have written more songs in the pop/rock genre. I have a beautiful green vinyl version of Stealin' Home and the whole album smokes! If you like mellower folk this album or his Fairport Convention material may be for you. If you like a little more of a melancholy pop/rock edge to your great songwriting check out Ian Matthews' solo album Stealin' Home. The songs Gimme an Inch Girl and Shake It were rightfully hits (Shake It being Matthews highest charting single at #13 on the Billboard charts).
Note That Best of Matthews' Southern Comfort includes all but 2 songs from the Matthews' Southern Comfort album Later That Same Year, which is out of print. The other 7 songs can be found on the Second Spring / Matthews' Southern Comfort CD, which I personally find less impressive than Later That Same Year.
