I grew up in Sydney during the 80s and had the opportunity to see the Mentals live a few times. Hearing their music makes me smile every time. They never took themselves seriously - they and their fans just wanted a fun time. Just about every song on this CD was a pretty big hit in Australia, but the biggest (and best maybe) were Too Many Times and If You Leave Me. This is fun music, you can't possibly be in a bad mood listening to this. Their lyrics won't change your life, but they sure will put a big smile on your face. Just try listening to this without dancing along!

And now for something completely different,

Mental As Anything has a different sound. If you're looking for a different sound, this is it. It's not the same old alternitive/hard rock other stuff thats out there today. If you're looking for something that's "out there yet makes you smile" Mental As Anything is the stuff. For all of us that remember the movie "Young Einstien" that came out in 1988, check out that soundtrack. They've got a song on there, too.

One Hit Wonder As Anything,

I had the band name stuck in my head -- "Mental As Anything" -- but could not clearly recall why. On a whim, I bought their Best Of collection.
MAA reminds me of a friend's amateur band in California. They had a loyal fanbase that came to their shows, and some clever songs, but never really caught on. MAA are clearly competent musicians, but after a few songs, the best-of collection all started sounding the same. I still do enjoy their hit, "(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet," and I must say that "Nips are Getting Bigger" as a certain demented frat-boy charm, as does "Apocalypso" -- kudos for a great title -- but the rest is forgettable I'm afraid.
