Classic British comedy by a legendary British comic writer.,
This review is from: The best of Morecambe and Wise (Board book)
Eddie Braben is one of the finest comedy craftsmen to have worked in British TV and radio.Think of all of the gifted gagwriters who provided Bob Hope,or Jack Benny,or Sid Caeser, with beautifully tailored material that captured and enhanced their stage personae.Eddie Braben did this first for Ken Dodd and then for Morecambe&Wise - and he did it all on his own.The Morecambe&Wise Show ran on BBCTV from the late 1960s to the late 70s,and it was watched and admired by everyone from factory workers to the Royal Family:one show attracted an audience of 28,835,000-more than half of the nation.Eddie Braben wrote all of the scripts, working himself to the point of exhaustion in his pursuit of the perfect comic sketch.Andre Previn took part,so too did Glenda Jackson,Diana Rigg,John Mills and Elton John;Cary Grant was a big fan,as were Gene Kelly,Jay Leno,Eric Idle and Ed Sullivan. The show epitomised all that was admirable about top quality popular entertainment, and the humour epitomised all that was valuable about the kind of comedy that was designed for the majority rather than the minority. If you know and like British comedy,or if you just enjoy comic writing and comic sketches, then this book should interest you, because it is by one of the genuine greats of the profession.
