5.0 out of 5 stars Great album for neophytes in Mötley Crüe!!
Since early 80's Motley Crue have been one of the most interesting American bands. Besides their music and shows, their path of excess left behind drug abuse, car crashes, weddings to some Hollywood stars.... the typical rockstar lifestyle. The best probably, a bunch of very good songs that nowadays are anthems of rock and roll music.

This compilation is a great album...

These Millenium Collection Series discs are frequently lacking, infrequently excellent, and in some cases downright confounding. Such is the case with this disc devoted to Motley Crue. I realize that these are budget-priced compilations for the ultra-casual fan, which means that there's only going to be about 12 or so songs on a disc, but you'd think some effort would be made to ensure the included songs were actually HITS, songs whose titles are instantly recognizable to those ultra-casual fans you are targeting, thus hopefully prompting them to PURCHASE it. I mean, the tracklisting here reads as if I gave my mom a stack of Motley Crue CD's and asked her to pick 12 songs for a best-of.

Anyone with even a passing knowledge of Motley Crue's music would expect to flip this jewel case over and see titles like "Live Wire", "Looks That Kill", "Smokin' In The Boys Room", "Wild Side", "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)", "Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)" and their only two songs to ever make the Top Ten on the pop singles charts - "Dr. Feelgood" and "Without You". NONE of these tunes are anywhere to be found. And while I can't deny the strength of songs like "All In The Name Of...", "Rock N' Roll Junkie", and "Generation Swine", those same ultra-casual fans aren't going to have much interest in those songs, because they've likely never HEARD them. If they have, they probably already have the entire MC collection and have no use for this.

Get "Greatest Hits" instead. It's only a few bucks more and it's a much more complete compilation. Still misses the mark on a few tunes, but anything's better than this slapdash mess. This truly looks like the kind of CD you'd see for sale at a truck stop between the Playboy air fresheners and the Yosemite Sam "BACK OFF" mudflaps.

This review is from: The Best of Motley Crue: 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
Half of this album isn't even Crue classics!!! This isn't even a best of in my opinion!!! How could the Crue let this happen. I mean this is the worst best of I have ever seen. Everyone skip this this unless u want to use it as a toy for your dog or as a frisbie!

I don't know who puts these things together, but the choices here could be better. It does have "Shout At The Devil", "Home Sweet Home", "Girls Girls Girls", and "Kickstart My Heart", BUT where's "Dr. Feelgood", "Smokin' In The Boys Room", "Wild Side", and "Don't Go Away Mad (just go away)"? I mean c'mon! This collection might be cheap, but go for the legit "Greatest Hits" instead, or better yet get "Decade Of Decadence" if you can still find that.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't fall for this, June 24, 2005

This review is from: The Best of Motley Crue: 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
The Motley Crue compilation "20th Century Masters-The Millennium Collection:The Best of Motley Crue" compilation is absolutely pointless. As you've probably already seen, the record company that released this album is 20th Century Masters, and what they have done here is taken twelve songs from the Motley Crue catalog and put them all on one disc. Sure,Crue classics like "Girls,Girls,Girls","Home Sweet Home","Piece Of Yor Action",etc. are here(check the track listing above to see what all of the tracks on here are)but where are "Don't Go Away Mad"(Just Go Away"),"Wild Side","Dr. Feelgood"(their biggest hit),"Live Wire",and several other Crue classics? They are not here, and they are replaced by good(although obsecure)songs from the Crue catalog such as ALL IN THE NAME OF...,HOOLIGAN'S HOLIDAY,etc. Oh,and let me add that Motley Crue's excellent, funny, profanity soaked, middle finger towards the united states government cover version of The Sex Pistols' "Anarchy In The U.K." was chopped off-for some reason,20th century edited every single part of the song where the "F" word appeared and they also chopped off the last three seconds of the song-what was the point? They(20th Century Masters)didn't even bother letting people know on the back of the CD that The Crue's version of Anarchy was edited, and Rock 'n Roll Junkie was also edited!(censored, and just for the record,I didn't buy this CD;I heard that those two songs were edited and listened to full snippets of them on this CD that is on a music program I have on my home computer). Like the reviewer above,I too do realize that these compilations are for casual fans on the budget, but the tracklisting here isn't going to do a good job at introducing new or casual Motley Crue fans to The Crue, and this compilation isn't even good for what it is.

My recommendation:Only buy this if you are a die hard Motley Crue fan that needs EVERYTHING that has the Motley Crue logo on there. Otherwise,if you already a die hard Crue fan or you are a new Motley Crue fan(if You're a new Crue fan and you want your introduction to The Crue to be a greatest hits package, then get their new two disc set "Red,White, and Crue"--if you get it right here off of Amazon, you will be able to buy it for the price of only one disc when it is a two disc set!)then don't waste your time or your money. This is just a poor, last minute cash in attempt at music from one of the best and one of the most succesful hair metal groups the world has ever seen-Motley Crue. The music on this album deserves five stars, however, the concept and packaging only deserve one star.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Sampler, perhaps., November 23, 2004

I'm a newer fan of the Crue (maybe a year or so), and I've already done extensive research on the band and read their awesome book "The Dirt" as well as listened to a lot of their hits on radio, and I can say as a well-informed fan that this CD does not do them justice.
I didn't give this album a lower score because A)Past Masters is well known for not including the best OR the most & B)I got it for a discount price so I wasn't expecting too much anyway.
With that said, here is my rant: Sure there are the monster hits 'Girls, Girls, Girls' and 'Shout at the Devil' along with 'Home Sweet Home', but that really is about it. Some, shall I say 'different songs' have been added instead of other mainstream hits like "Dr. Feelgood' 'Live Wire' 'Wild Side' and 'Without You'. In replacement of these, we see flops like "Generation Swine" and 'Hooligan's Holiday'. (Although I'm not a Sex Pistols fan, I really enjoyed MC's cover of 'Anarchy in the UK'...)
I guess I would recommend this album to 'beginning' fans because it gives you the bare essentials plus a few rarities. I just hope that a newcomer doesn't pick this album up and come to the conclusion that this was all Motley had to offer.
But, as a Motley Crue compilation overall...it sucks. Get Shout at the Devil, Feelgood, or better yet, their ACTUAL Greatest Hits album & DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Censorship sucks, November 19, 2003

This review is from: The Best of Motley Crue: 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
This would be an awesome disc, if not for the edited format. There are only 2 songs which get edited. Teaser, and Anarchy (Anarchy is the most obvious). Like someone mentioned above, why put it on the disc, if you are gonna butcher it. Or atleast put out and un-edited version. This is Motley Crue for fu** sake, how you gonna put out only a censored version?

This compilation is a great album for neophytes in Motley Crue. It reviews all the eras of the band from early 80's to year 2000. It also includes HOOLIGANS HOLIDAY (with John Corabi on vocals) which does not appear in GREATEST HITS (1998).

Summing up: a good album for lots of people (except for fans... who already have all these songs)

This review is from: The Best of Motley Crue: 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
The Motley Crue 20th Century Masters CD is full of good tunes, but it does not actually represent the best of Motley Crue. For every hit present, there is one missing.Classics like Shout at the Devil, Home Sweet Home,Girls,Girls,Girls, and Kickstart My Heart are on this CD,but essential Crue tunes like Live Wire,Looks that Kill,Wildside,Smokin in the Boys Room,Dr.Feelgood,Without You are all missing. The songs that are on here are good songs, but due to the fact that so many essential Motley Crue songs aren't on here this isn't really a good purchase for anyone. If you know anything about Motley Crue you'll already know that many of their hits are missing just from looking at the song list,so this CD doesn't really offer anything for diehard fans, or for new fans. For a good introduction to the Crue try to find Decade of Decadence 81-91.

5.0 out of 5 stars Necessary?, February 17, 2004
This review is from: The Best of Motley Crue: 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
Well someone is making money and it ain't me. This 20th Century Series has CDs on everyone it seems; Motley Crue, KISS, Alabama, Cheap Trick, etc. These bands already have Greatest Hits packages (some many more than they need *wink* Gene Simmons). However for a low price you can buy a very general history of Motley Crue's music. But if you're a fan of the Crue, you already have these songs and have probably bought them more than once in one form or another.

There's only one song from 'Too Fast for Love', "Piece of your Action" may be an odd choice since "Live Wire" may be a more obvious selection. The "Theatre of Pain" selection is 'Home Sweet Home', though it was a smash hit as the first 'power ballad', I can't believe their "Smokin' in the Boy's Room" remake couldn't find room here.

Another shocker is "All in the name of.." beat out "Wild Side" from the Girls, Girls, Girls album. This makes NO sense.

Like I said for the casual Crue fan, or for someone interested in the band for the first time, this is a good price to start on their journey of discovery with one of the wildest bands of all time.

I will admit I really like the live picture on the back of the CD from the 'Shout at the Devil' era. Mick looks absolutly possessed.

3.0 out of 5 stars I took a ride on the Wild Side, October 31, 2003
This review is from: The Best of Motley Crue: 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
Besides the other reviews that mention the hits not included : ( so I won't do so now, I personaly miss Wild Side being included on this CD. I hear that song and I flash on the video. Remember the drum solo? So if other songs would of been included this CD would have gotton a higher rating. If you are collecting all Motley Crue stuff, go for it, otherwise, save your money on this collection.
