Book Description

September 1997
A six-inch square isn't a lot of space to convey the essence of a seventy-four minute selection of hot jazz, smoking blues, or mainstream pop, let alone the raucous noise of the colorful, image-conscious "alternative" scene. Yet, a decade into the compact disc revolution, CD packaging design has evolved into a rich pop art medium. This book shows how designers of blues, jazz, and pop/rock CD artwork use the limited space in the booklet, jewel box, tray card, and disc itself to create images that complement the music and musicians.

In the pages of The Best Music CD art and Design, more than 300 full-color images showcase 200 CDs. Informative captions explain how the design fits the music; quotes from artists, designers, and record company art directors give further insight to the creative process. Surveying the best designs of the 1990s, this volume is sure to inspire CD designers for years to come.

2.0 out of 5 stars very limited to mostly poorly designed blues covers, November 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Best Music Cd Art + Design (Hardcover)
The title is very misleading in two ways. One the title simply states it's the "Best Music Cd Art + Design" when it's focus is the Blues. Second is that the book uses the term "best" which doesn't apply here at all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful album cover art with discussion about each., July 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Best Music Cd Art + Design (Hardcover)
A wonderful book! Taking the time to look closely at selections of music CD art is a worthwhile pastime. The authors have selected the best in three genres: Blues, Jazz and Rock/Pop. They have interviewed the musicians, designers and producers about the process of creating the packaging design. Interesting stories of how art was chosen, who has input and how it relates to the music are all included. And the book is beautiful to look at!
