Book Description

Best New Poets November 4, 2009

Entering its fourth year, Best New Poets has established itself as a crucial venue for rising poets and a valuable resource for poetry lovers. The only publication of its kind, this annual anthology is made up exclusively of work by writers who have not yet published a full-length book. The poems included in this eclectic sampling represent the best from the many that have been nominated by the country's top literary magazines and writing programs, as well as some two thousand additional poems submitted through an open online competition. The work of the fifty writers represented here provides the best perspective available on the continuing vitality of poetry as it's being practiced today.

Distributed for the Samovar Press in cooperation with Meridian: The Semi-Annual from the University of Virginia

Editorial Reviews

Review

This collection stands out among the crowd claiming to represent emergent poets. Much of the editing and preliminary reading was done by emerging poets themselves, which results in an anthology that's fresh and eclectic, and may actually represent a significant portion of the best new poetry being written by the next generation.... [Best New Poets] assures the reader that poetry, even in a generation of text messaging and MP3 players, is still alive and well. The youthfulness of the anthology, combined with the wide scope of its contents, is apparent in the poems, which are edgy and daring.

(Virginia Quarterly Review )

Unlike novelists and bad-boy memoirists, emerging poets are unlikely to sprawl on Oprah's couch, date starlets, or rouse bidding wars. With an alert ear for new voices, this anthology offers a different kind of validation: that of being well heard. The result is a vibrant smorgasbord.... [Best New Poets] bears evidence of the insistent inquiries of self and the world that drive poetry.

(Foreword )

[One] comes to realize that the adjectives 'new' and 'emerging' are mere technicalities in this instance. Although none of the poets included here have published a full-length book of poetry, many are MFA students or graduates, and chapbook authors, and most have already seen some of their poems published in the most renowned and exclusive journals in North America.... The result is a remarkably diverse mix of poems.

(BookPleasures )

Now in its fifth year, this annual volume presents some of the best young poets emerging from the MFA creative writing programs all over the U.S....[These poets] prove that American poetry has the strength and vision to move beyond the MFA environment in order to reshape and reflect past traditions.

(The Bloomsbury Review )

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but ..., December 9, 2009

This review is from: Best New Poets 2009: 50 Poems from Emerging Writers (Paperback)
I have read all of the Best New Poets of ... series. I've discovered some amazing new poets, poets I will search out and read for years to come. I found this year's offering to be uneven--some marvelous poems and some that seem less deserving of inclusion. Of course, poetry is subjective, and others may find poems that leave me unmoved to be profound. Among the new poets I found particularly outstanding were: Amanda Pritchard Moore, Michael J. Grabell, Jonathon Williams, Stephanie Rogers, Caitlyn Doyle, and Kate Sweeney. Their work, alone, is well worth the price of the book (which, incidently, is very reasonably priced). And, for anyone who hasn't read previous entries in this series, I recommend them all. They contain work from emerging poets that will set the future course of poetry.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic series representing the year's best up-and-coming poets, November 22, 2009
This review is from: Best New Poets 2009: 50 Poems from Emerging Writers (Paperback)
This series of books does a remarkable job of printing poetry by emergent poets of the millenium. This is powerful, fresh poetry that is well put-together and thoughtful. Very deserving of a read by those looking for new writers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Uneven, April 1, 2010

This review is from: Best New Poets 2009: 50 Poems from Emerging Writers (Paperback)
Of all the books in this series, this is the most uneven. There are truly noteworthy poets represented alongside work that is mediocre at best. There also doesn't seem to be any sort of guiding principle applied to the selection of work. Although I tend to like anthologies with a wide array of styles and perspectives, this one seems to fall flat. For anyone interested in the work of emerging poets, I would recommend the 2007 or 2008 anthologies instead.
