Why no extended "CatDog" song?, September 24, 2004
This review is from: Best of Nicktoons (Audio CD)
This is the first of two Nicktoons compilation albums, featuring musical highlights from "Rugrats" (that's tracks 3-9), "KaBlam!" (tracks 11-13), "The Ren & Stimpy Show" (tracks 15-19), "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters" (tracks 21-23), "The Angry Beavers" (tracks 25-27), "Hey Arnold" (tracks 29-33), and "Rocko's Modern Life" (tracks 35-38), as well as the standard version of the "CatDog" theme song, a supposedly "bonus track". All the other tracks are "Nick On-Air Music", some of which are sound clips of bumpers from the network during the mid-to-late 90's.
The songs from "Rugrats", "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters", "The Angry Beavers", and "Hey Arnold!" are apparently original studio recordings, as they don't have sound effects getting in the way of the songs. "Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy", "Ren's Pecs", and "Kilted Yaksmen Anthem" are ripped from the earlier "You Eediot!" album, but strangely, the version of "Dog Pound Hop" featured here is the TV version and not the extended version featured on said album. Unfortunately, the "CatDog" theme song is also not the extended version. Also unfortunate is that the "Rocko" songs, "Log Commercial", and "Haunted Train Blues" sound more like sound clips from the episodes they were featured in. The same can also be said for "Thunder Girl Flying" and "Kablammy Song" (the first of which is just a ten-second sound clip of Thunder Girl singing to herself), but the "Kablam!" theme itself is also a studio recording!
The CD comes with a lyrics booklet, but it's not a very good lyrics booklet. They print the words of the songs themselves, but they don't tell you which character is saying which line. (For example, although Gerald sings the "Haunted Train Blues" himself, Helga interrupts with "That's it!" at the end, but the booklet doesn't say that Helga says it.)
