Editorial Reviews

The 20th Century Masters series is the best-selling single-artist line in music history and is being re-released by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) in its ground-breaking, environmentally-friendly packaging format. A first for the music industry, the standard package (both sleeve and tray) will be completely paper-recyclable, continuing the company's long-standing commitment to being "green."

To further reduce the amount of paper in the Eco-Pack, the CD booklet will no longer be offered. Official liner notes are easily accessible on the Internet at http://www.ilovethatsong.com/green.

UMe is the first North American music company to replace the traditional jewel case with recycled paperboard sleeves and the plastic tray with trays made from PaperFoam®, a new packaging technology from Shorewood Packaging, a business of International Paper, that is paper-recyclable and biodegradable. Shorewood Packaging is the first North American packaging supplier to produce disc trays from PaperFoam®.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Rumours" are not in the air!, November 20, 2003
By
roufmouf (United States) - See all my reviews
One of my favorite songs from the original "Greatest Hits" is "Rumours In The Air" because unlike most of their other songs, it has a distinctive, creative, in-depth sound. It was more than just a pretty face.

I bought the 20th Century Masters compilation because its sound quality is remastered and superior to the original compilation. But after buying it, I realized that "Rumours" was mysteriously left off. This is inexcusable considering both the unused space left on the disc, and the inclusion of the cookie cutter 80's song "I Did It For Love." To remove a song that is highly creative and unique to include a song that is highly typical and draped in 80's bland taints this collection.

One day the recording industry will start offering true "greatest" hits packages so people won't have to download the songs needed to fill in the gaps left on the CD's they buy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great songs, great sound, great value!, June 20, 2007
This review is from: The Best of Night Ranger - 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection (Eco-Friendly Packaging) (Audio CD)
It sure seems like people have an axe to grind with these 20th Century Masters "Best Of" collections. The common complaints are usually with the song selection and the album length. No matter what songs appear on a "best of" or "greatest hits" package, there's always going to be a track that gets left off that you think is one of the band's better tracks. As to the album length - while it's true they left room for another 30 minutes worth of material, this compilation is not supposed to be some all encompassing anthology. The 20th Century Masters series serves as an introduction to the artist and their most noteworthy material. Typically that means 10-12 tracks, which obviously won't fill the entire disc.

I think the record company nailed it perfectly with the Night Ranger 20th Century Masters album. They picked the best 2-3 songs off of each of the band's early albums, cleaned up the sound considerably, and presented them in a very affordable package. You get all of the band's radio hits, including the extremely huge power ballad "Sister Christian", digitally remastered, all for about half the cost of the average CD.

The Best of Night Ranger: the 20th Century Masters Millennium Collection is an ideal introduction to the AOR powerhouse that is Night Ranger. It provides a great overview of the band's style, as well as giving existing Night Ranger fans a chance to hear this classic material with greatly improved sound.

NOTE: This compilation is also available in eco-friendly packaging (recycled paper sleeves and trays, liner notes posted online rather than including a CD booklet), for those who prefer a "greener" approach to CD buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sounding Best Of, January 2, 2012
Since this is a 'Best of' most of the songs fall into the category of ... you guessed it, hit songs. I am going to assume you're a Night Ranger fan on some level if you're looking to get this particular cluster of songs. I won't go into every song, but I'll highlight the ones I like. First thing first, the remastered sound on these classic songs is superb! And I really like the extremely underrated track, Kelly Keagy sang, "I Did It For Love". They're hugely well-known ballad-ish (but not-quite-a-ballad) rock track, from 1983, "Sister Christian" is predictably, their title opener. While they are most famous for this song, it is not their best (put down the pitch-forks and get off the bandwagon ppl, I don't want to hear it) it just isn't. With that said, who doesn't like "Sister Christian"? And on another note, is Kelly not the best big brother ever? Anyways, moving on ... I came into Night Ranger only knowing their mega hits and their song in slot number two ("Don't Tell Me You Love Me") is just that. This is a classic NR rocking song: a catchy chorus, with great vocals. Enough said. "When You Close Your Eyes" is one of my favorites! I like that they exchange vocals on this one. Jack's got the verse, Kelly on the bridge, and the two of them kicking out the chorus. "Four in the Morning" or as I always refer to it, "I Can't Take Anymore" is another staple in the Night Ranger line-up and deserves its spot on this CD. The song moves along nicely with toe-tapping beats and that classic chorus that you can't help but sing along to. "Goodbye", the ninth song of the eleven, is one of their songs I would put above that all time overplayed "Sister Christian". Night Ranger is so much more than "S C" and "Goodbye" proves that sentiment nicely. "Secret Of My Success" is a good upbeat song and the album closes out with "I Did It For Love" and is the only non Night Ranger composition. Great lyric on that song too, btw. My only real complaint on this is it's only 11 songs. While 11 songs is just fine for a studio release, this is a Greatest Hits album. They have more than 11 greatest songs / fan favorites and by all that is right in this world, why wasn't the title track from their "Man In Motion" album included? Also, there is no good reason why "Rain Comes Crashing Down" and "Hearts Away" from the Big Life album were not tacked on at the end of this compilation as well. They had the room.

I like the hits. Best Of CDs make me happy. This CD makes me happy with my only real issue being that they didn't add a few songs, but hey whatever. Nobody asked me (and I'm OK with that).
