Product Description

Lemonheads ~ Best Of: Atlantic Years

Review

The Best Of The Lemonheads--mainly covering the time from 1992's It's A Shame About Ray to their last album Car Button Cloth--highlights both Dando's gifts and his insurmountably irritating flaws. Playing on his wide-eyed charms with deceptive determination, he looked like the kind of boy who could get it together to write songs but would probably find pedestrian crossings bewildering. It was an image that gave sometimes ordinary songs a veneer of otherworldliness and, more importantly, that moment-capturing magic. -- New Musical Express

If you have never heard it, you need to get this CD.

Those two albums have all the songs from this "greatest hits" cd (except one or two), plus many more excellent ones that are just as good.
C. Pugsley
Atlantic has given us a high quality collection here of the LEMONHEADS' BEST recordings from THE ATLANTIC YEARS, as it states.

Mr Dando's songs are unbelievable, let me first say this. Are they represented on this album, why not. To be very technical, "is this actually the very best of the Lemonheads?" -No. Whoever put the album together left out some serious gems like "Stove", "Down About It", and "Paint." We serious fans get a little sad when we see our favorite band get cut up like this, but the final result is an album that will definitely rock your socks off, no kidding. Although not everything was put on there, some of these songs represent the best rock songs of the 90's.

This is a great Cd and a "must have" for any rock fan of great bands-great music. As for you people that bemoan the lack of the LEMONHEADS' earlier recordings before they signed with Atlantic Records, try bashing their previous record label(s) for not issuing any of it, as that label owns the rights to the previous output by this band. Atlantic has given us a high quality collection here of the LEMONHEADS' BEST recordings from THE ATLANTIC YEARS, as it states.

As stated, this is the best of the Atlantic years, hence no early material. Most of what's here is very foot-tappin' and happy. If your interested in the singles from the last few cd's, then this is what you want. Included is "Into your arms", "If I could talk I'd tell you", and 5 tracks from the "It's a Shame about Ray" album. Actually, that album is just as good as this collection is in my opinion. If you enjoy artists such as "Juliana Hatfield" and "Toad the wet sprocket", you'll like either of these Lemonheads cd's. Let's hope Evan can get some more music out soon.

This is a nice best of as it adds some extras not available on the US best of (which is a pretty pointless buy if you have Its a shame..., Come on Feel and Car Button Cloth). The Lemonheads are one of those bands where the Best of simply won't do (as you'll end up getting all the original albums) so the cover of Fade to Black is a nice enticer. Still, where is Different Drum to be found in this modern age now that Favorite Spanish Dishes is out of print? A (major) minor quibble. Just like Evan's whole life.

I love CDs that offer alittle of everything, and this greatest hits collection does just that. Most importantly, the best version ever done of "Mrs. Robinson" is the Lemonheads version, and it alone is worth the price of the CD. If you have never heard it, you need to get this CD. Yes, the CD has the punkish popish rock the Lemonheads are known for, but this CD offers more with the a country-ish "Big Gay Heart", and a wonderful acoustic "Ride With Me". It is an outstanding greatest hits collection.

Evan Dando and his rotating cast of Lemonheads are one of those bands that seemed on the brink of becoming huge stars, cut a near flawless album, and then watched it all mysteriously slip away in a mess of drugs, alcohol and ego. Dando had the movie star good looks, his band cut easy to digest jangle-pop with his warm voice delivering the lyrics. Imagine a catchier REM being fronted with a voice like The Smithereens' Pat DiNizio.

"The Atlantic Years" covers The Lemonheads' four album tenure with that classic label, ignoring the punkier indie years and the albums Dando cut after he cleaned up. But it also ignores Lovey (the song "Ride With Me" is an acoustic remake), and only features two tracks from Car Button Cloth. Which means that, out of 12 songs, 9 come from the albums It's a Shame About Ray and Come on Feel the Lemonheads.

While these are Dando's best songs, there's obviously a lot of room for an expanded edition. The almost hit from "Come On Feel...., "Into Your Arms," is here, and no-one has ever rocked Paul Simon the way Dando did with the remake of "Mrs. Robinson." Dando's gal-pal Juliana Hatfield is a frequent guest vocalist. But given the somewhat lopsided division of songs, you'd be excused for just picking up "Ray" and waiting for a deluxe best of to inevitably arrive.

Instead of getting this album, just buy "It's A Shame About Ray" and "Come On Feel The Lemonheads." Those two albums have all the songs from this "greatest hits" cd (except one or two), plus many more excellent ones that are just as good. You won't regret it.

This cd pairs both driving electric songs with more somber acoustic "ballads". Songs about drugs and love seem to be the main theme here. Not to say this is a bad thing. Alot of mid-90's pop bands made careers out of drugs and love. Some are even still around. My Drug Buddy is actually a really good stand out track for me. An electric cover of Simon & Garfunkle's "Mrs. Robinson" makes for a fun upbeat musical experience. I'd say that this is a good cd for a long drive. It's not my favorite record, but it's not sooo bad as to be called the worst thing I've ever heard. I give it three stars for making these songs sound so happy and being able to sing along. Besides who doesn't like to hear Julianna Hatfield?
