No false advertising here, this really is an adequate "Best of". The Mahavishnu Orchestra was what you might call an "exasperatingly talented band". John McLaughlin set the bar for fusion guitarists, and Mahavishnu Orchestra was the prime fusion band. You can even argue that they were the ultimate "prog-rock" band, too, because what they did wasn't that far from Emerson, Lake and Palmer or Yes, although it was performed at a much higher and more tasteful level. Still, the hyperkinetic, furiously scribbling passages with three virtuoso frontline instruments competing may drive some of your friends from the room.

The Mahavishnu Orchestra was a group with a huge gravitational pull, influencing virtually all "fusion" guitarists, and many rock outfits. You can pretty much draw a straight line from Mahavishnu to Jeff Beck's "Blow by Blow" and "Wired", and to Robert Fripp's middle 70's and early 80's incarnations of his band, King Crimson. The group also featured a drummer, Billy Cobham, who became a model for many of his peers, including Bill Bruford of Yes and King Crimson.

Included here are some of the monster cuts from the pioneering album, "The Inner Mounting Flame", "Birds of Fire" and "Open Country Joy" from the second album, another couple from "Visions of the Emerald Beyond" (including my all-time favorite, "Lila's Dance"), and "Wings of Karma" from "Apocalypse".

I do wish they had included "Lotus on an Irish Stream" from album one, because it's the best evidence that this group could be wonderfully lyrical. I wish they had done more music in that vein.

There's a reason they didn't make it big. Musical wizardry doesn't make up for a general lack of decent tunes.
