Product Description

Amazon.com

Of all the topical songwriters to emerge during the early to mid-1960s, Tom Paxton may have been the most jocose. On this 25-song collection, he takes sarcastic potshots at politics ("Talking Watergate"), poverty ("You Can Eat Dog Food"), war ("Lyndon Johnson Told the Nation"), even Anita Bryant ("Anita O.J."). The first six tracks here were recorded at the Newport Folk Festivals of 1963 and 1964, before Paxton's first national release, and include a poignant reading of the compassionate "Last Thing on My Mind" and a previously unreleased version of "Bottle of Wine" (which would become a Top 10 hit by the Fireballs in '68). But this compilation's last two-thirds, culled from two late-'70s studio recordings, demonstrate that Paxton could be as caustic as he was clever. He weaves stirring melodies with eloquent lyrics on the somber "Death of Stephen Biko" and his haunting account of the suicide of folk compatriot Phil Ochs ("Phil"). --Scott Holter

While Tom Paxton is a talented musician, this selection of songs from his Vanguard albums features some strange choices. Why the compiler included "Ramblin' Boy" and "Lyndon Johnson Told the Nation" (both good songs, but easily available on other CDs) and left off a great song like "Bring Back the Chair" is surprising. There are great songs here, such "White Bones of Allende" and "Anita O.J.", but the collection would have been better served if it hadn't tried to include "greatest hits" originally recorded before Paxton came to Vanguard records.

This is an early Tom Paxton collection (at the Newport Folk Festival, singing with Pete Seeger as high harmony on the chorus, etc ) is of value for any Tom Paxton fan. It doesn't have most of the best of Paxton's songs, for obvious reasons. But if you're a Paxton fan you'll like this CD. And for those of us who have the original Vanguard LPs, buying the CD allows you to share the music with younger folks who not only don't have a record player, but don't know what an LP record is.
