4.0 out of 5 stars The Measure of the Message

3.0 out of 5 stars Two standout songs, but not enough else
This album features two brilliant songs: For Future Generations and Measure of a Man. Both songs have strong and inspirational lyrics and lively and catchy music. The other songs on this album were disappointing, though; see if you can find other recordings of the two standouts.

4Him has long been one of the most successful contemporary Christian vocal groups of the last 20 years. Their melody and sound are both unmistakable, and their upbeat, yet humbling vocal style has been a great constant. This compilation album, their first, is a collection of most of 4Him's #1 hit songs. There are some very uplifting and inspirational melodies on this CD, spanning the group's entire career so far. Upbeat songs like "Wings" will get your toes tapping, and solemn ballads such as "He Never Changes" and "Where There Is Faith" will tug at your heartstrings. They offset each other pretty nicely; the track arrangement is well done and blends the different songs together. I don't dip into the contemporary well very often, but I really enjoy 4Him's music and if you're a fan of this group, this CD is a must-own, as well as their latest albums, "Obvious" and "Hymns". It's a great jumping-on point for new listeners as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't seem to get tired of it!, April 21, 2000
This review is from: Best Ones (Audio CD)
Unlike some, I have NOT been a 4HIM fan for years. In fact, I basically stumbled onto them while listening to a local Christian radio countdown that featured their songs. That small exposure was enough to prompt me to buy this CD...and I have never regretted it.

Their musical talents are obvious, from their catchy tunes to their heartfelt lyrics, the instrumentation is superb. But best of all, their music just makes you feel good, whether you're a "die-hard" Christian or not. There is universal appeal in their messages and a timelessness that will keep me listening to them most likely for the rest of my life. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Greatest Hits, April 20, 2002
This review is from: Best Ones (Audio CD)
4Him has long been one of the mainstays of Contemporary Christian music. Their smooth sounds are always a delight and the lyrics that are put to those sounds will make you reconsider your position at the throne of Grace. If you have none of their work in your collection, this is a MUST HAVE, because it has the majority of their #1 hits. That's right, it's only a majority. They have put many more top songs out than can be placed on one disc. My only disappointment with this disc is that it was not set as a double album so that all their top hits COULD be placed therein. After you have purchased this album, plan on getting their previous work, because even more joy awaits you as you open discs such as THE MESSAGE and OBVIOUS and THE RIDE. The only negative I could even consider for this album is this: if you already have all their previous works, there is not much sense in getting this one! May God's blessings fill your life as you listen to His message brought to you by these messengers from His throne.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD!, April 8, 2004
This review is from: Best Ones (Audio CD)
The cd is an excellent collection of one of the more popular Christian groups around. The songs included are the best ones from 1991-1996 and reflect the group's staying power.

My personal favorites in the cd are: Where There is Faith, Measure of a Man, Lay It All on the Line, Couldn't We Stand, and For Future Generations. Regardless of what your personal favorites are, the cd is highly recommended!

Buy and enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Well, not ALL the Best Ones, January 3, 2001
This review is from: Best Ones (Audio CD)
Don't get me wrong here, BEST ONES was a great album, but I felt that they had too many songs from THE MESSAGE on there. I would have left songs from THE MESSAGE off since it did come out just before this one. I was also surprised that "When It Comes to Living" wasn't on there. The album was good in that it collects a lot of songs that made 4 Him great and it adds a long missing addition to their CD lineup (that is, they've need a compilation album for a while...now if they'd just make a live album), but it wasn't all the BEST ONES.

I won't argue that 4Him should have replaced any of these songs with other songs, but there is still a great deal of great music they put out over the last 10 years. These are the ones that hit number one. If you are unfamiliar with 4Him, by all means, get this CD. You will then want the first one, the second one, the third one...

4 Him exploded on the Christian music scene in 1990 and continued to be at the top of the charts for the next decade. This CD collects 14 of their #1 songs in one place for easy access. It offers a mix of songs from all 6 projects released before this came out.

Even the casual listener to Christian radio during the 90's will recognize some of the classics collected here. "Basics of Life," "Where There is Faith," "Why?," and "For Future Generations" are just some highlights of this CD stuffed full of great songs that will be familiar to everyone.

Like any best of project, loyal fans (like me) will have some argument with the song selection. My biggest complaint here is that the song selection leans toward the newer recordings, with 9 of the 14 from their last three CD's. This leaves little room for their early hits. "Basics of Life" is only represented by the title song, but there were lots of great songs on it. And how could they leave out "Man You Would Write About" from their second CD? Still, I do find myself listening to this CD more then enough times to justify the money I spent on it.

4 Him's balance of solid lyrics with great harmony earned them a legion of well deserved fans. Anyone interested in their music will love this CD, a collection of one of Christian music's classic acts.

5.0 out of 5 stars ***** NEVER in my life have I heard such music . . . *****, June 16, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Best Ones (Audio CD)
OK, here's my story . . . I knew that 4Him was always pretty popular since the early 90s, but I never understood why?? I mean I thought that they were totally "praise and worship" and there was no way I would ever be into them considering the type of music I usually like! BUT, one morning my Christian Radio Station was playing Measure of a Man, and now I am SO thankful to that song because it has got me into the absolute BEST Christian group ever! Measure of a Man is definitely #1 on my top 100 favorite song list! After I heard that song that morning, I went straight to the computer to look up 4Him. I found that it was on their 2 "best of" type CDs. I listened to samples of the other songs and I immediately feel in love with their music! I purchased both CDs (Best Ones AND Chapter One . . . A Decade) online, and now I think my CD player and definitely my sisters are absolutely sick of them - but I'M certainly not and will never be! I can't begin to explain how wonderful these songs are, but I will do my best. Here are my favorites . . . Real Thing, Measure of a Man, Why, Where There Is Faith, Wings, Before the River Came, The Message, Lay It All on the Line, For Future Generations

4Him's songs are so different from any other artist's songs . . . they don't repeat the same words over and over again and their songs have so much thought and are so different from each other . . . from tune to words they're just fantastic! Most other Christian artists seem to think the same cheap way of writing music, but these artists put so much thought into the lyrics naturally making themselves the very best Christian group by far! Even if you absolutely don't like this type of music - 4Him will MAKE you get into theirs! You wouldn't think that I would love 4Him at the age of 13 and being into more "pop/contemporary" type music! But, 4Him HAS become my favorite CCM group and I know I won't find another like it! Andy Chrisman, Mark Harris, Kirk Sullivan, and Marty Magehee have the talent of a million artists put together and even more! They were a wonderful group set out to spread God's word through their creative and brilliant music! I wish they would have stayed together longer though, but now Andy Chrisman and Mark Harris have done solo albums which are also excellent, but not as terrific as all 4 together as 4Him! Andy, Mark, Kirk, and Marty combined 4 wonderful talents into one group which makes it bursting with quality! The group wouldn't have been the same without Andy Chrisman's absolute phenomenal voice or Mark's superb songwriting and . . . the list goes on and on. So, if you're looking into 4Him - FIRST I'd like to assure you that you won't be disappointed OR sorry once you get it and will wish that you'd have done it sooner and SECOND . . . you should definitely get THIS CD! I have always liked "best of" CDs if an artist has done a lot of music and this is absolutely no exception! Get this CD as soon as possible, and thanks for taking the time to read my review . . . I do hope it helps!

Also, please visit: www.friendsof4him.net and www.heismyvision.net . . .they're both excellent 4Him fan sites!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great compilation, very few weak spots, July 11, 2006
This review is from: Best Ones (Audio CD)
One of the things I enjoyed most about 4Him is that they didn't have whiny songs that unfortuntely often plague CCM. These are a group of talented artists and have some amazing voices, particular Andy Chrisman. It's worthwhile to have in your collection if you like CCM but don't want repetitive "praise him praise him praise him" tracks. I particularly like For Future Generations and Basics of Life. Mark Harris is another who will also have a good career post-4Him.
