4.0 out of 5 stars This recording is OK, April 24, 1999
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
This recording is OK, But does anyone Know how to get a copy of Putting It Straight? I have a worn out copy of that recording and have been trying to replace it for a long time. It has the same cover as this "Best Of..." And is my personal favorite. Michael

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Compilation...But Not Enough Meat & Potatos, November 6, 2004

3 1/2 Stars = Very Good

I really don't like "Best of" compilations, they're always hit & miss. "The Best of Pat Travers" is no exception, even though I rated it 3 1/2 stars. If this was someone elses "Best of," I'd rate it 4 or even 4 1/2 stars, but I'm talking about PT (a much higher standard), & PT's back catolog is filled with superior masterpieces not included here. This compilation just scratches the surface of one of the greatest unheralded talents in KILLER ROCK GUITAR. Though there are great songs from Pat's extensive 70's, 80's catalog like "Stevie", "Life in London", "Crash & Burn," "Heat in the Street", "Rock & Roll Suzie", "Amgwanna Kick Booty", "New Age Music," "Snorting Whisky", & the gorgeous "Dedication," the rest are just stabs (intentional?) for commercial appeal. Especially songs from Pat's last Polydor album "Hot Shot," where he either seems to be looking for a hit, or self parodying his best 70's material, rather thin. This might of been a result of Polydor pressuring him for sales, but none of these songs from "Hotshot;" "Killer" & "Women on the Edge of Love," & from "Black Pearl;" "I'd Rather See You Dead," deserve to be here when compared to his cutting edge influential Funk/Jazz/Blues/Metal of the 70's, nor any of the remaining unmentioned material on this complilation, hence the lower rating than some of the other reviewers here.

For those who are really interested in Pat, try "Putting it Straight," "Making Magic," & "Heat in the Street" (they're back in print!) in that order. Or, if you really want what would qualify as one of the greatest live albums ever, & a much more representative best of compilation, pick up "Go For What You Know."

One more thing....Please stop the Foghat comparisons. I've read numerous reviews comparing the two. Nothing against Foghat, but it's a very superficial & unfair comparison regarding both bands. I will concede though that both bands have done some great blues covers, but thats where the similarity ends.

Nuff said.

5.0 out of 5 stars PUTTIN' IT STRAIGHT, March 20, 2002
By
Michael Courtney "exiled01" (San Antonio, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
This best of features the majority of Pat Travers more memorable tunes, but lacks those great songs that didn't get much airplay. Like the other fans that wrote reviews I am looking for PUTTIN' IT STRAIGHT, MAKIN' MAGIC, and PAT TRAVERS. The songs included in this collection are all good songs from an assortment of albums released in the 70's and 80's.

On the content of this album, these songs would be considered his hits more than likely. The better songs are "Stop & Smile", "Boom, Boom", "Crash & Burn", "Snortin' Whiskey", the somewhat reggae "New Age Music", "I La La La Love You", and "Women On the Edge of Love". My favorites are "Stevie", "Life In London", "I'd Rather See You Dead", and "Killer". My all-time fave "Killer Instinct" isn't here, though!

Off hand, I don't remember all the good musicians that played with Pat through the years and on various albums, but most of the great bass is by Peter "Mars" Cowling and there is some excellent guitar work by Pat Thrall[Automatic Man & Hughes/Thrall]. Most of Pat's newer releases are blues, but he showed his blue side more than once in his rock 'n roll days, too! Along with Foghat, Pat Travers had a knack for playing great blues and older rock songs. Maybe we'll get lucky someday and some of his older releases will be made available. Until then treat yourself to some Pat Travers, or try both volumes of his ANTHOLOGY for even more great music.
