5.0 out of 5 stars PATTI AUSTIN'S GEMS - WAITING TO BE RE-DISCOVERED . . ., June 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Best Of Patti Austin (Audio CD)
REVIEW BY KIRK DOUGLAS PROVO

The great thing about this re-mastered collection, mostly compiled from Austin's time spent on Creed Taylor's CTI label in the mid to late 70s is how timeless the music really is. Having said this, it is also startling how under- appreciated the artist is as a pop music force to be reckoned with. The tunes here are strong on melody and beautifully realized from a arranging/production standpoint.

"Say You Love Me" is as warm as a summer breeze and the gentle "You Don't Have To Say You're Sorry" is sweet lullaby of late, re-recorded by Vanessa William's. Austin's "What's At The End Of The Rainbow" sounds like it's been around for generations . . . .the delivery sounding like a more soulful Barbra Streisand.

As writer and singer Austin goes all out on the gospel-tinged, funky prayer of "Sweet Sadie The Savior" (also recorded by Blood Sweat & Tears), and it's interesting to hear the 70s take on "That's Enough For Me" which was up-dated on Austin's last GRP CD "That Special Place". Both versions have their own special qualities.

"I Just Want To Know" and "Love Me Again" are for those quiet, romantic times. "Havana Candy" and "Another Nail For My Heart" are two early exhibits of Patti Austin's unique sense of humour. Frankly, one cannot go wrong with this 16-song collection unless you hate melodic, well-written, perfectly sung music.

Patti Austin is a superstar, make no mistake. These CTI recordings only tap into part of her dynamic artistry.
