5.0 out of 5 stars Daddy'O loves it
Got this for my dad for Christmas and he closed his eyes and smiled. Then went into a history lesson on Paul Desmond and jazz for me but it was great seeing him so happy over a gift.

versus
3.0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment
The CD title doesn't describe the contents. I have always been a fan of Desmond since the days he and Dave Brubeck had top-ten records in the '50s. This CD included too much of the other musicians on most selections and not enough of Desmond. Anybody who is unfamiliar with Paul Desmond's playing would be grossly misinformed about him if they believed the title!

5.0 out of 5 stars More of the "Best", February 14, 2010

No one matches the lyrical sounds of Paul Desmond's Alto. This compilation is great, to say "Best" is inaccurate - "Highlighting" would be better - Paul Desmond is one of the few that produces consistent high quality. No single CD could encompass all his "Best" I have a number of the CD's that are represented here, but it encourages me to obtain some of the others represented here. Especially "Skylark", I love the haunting gypsy guitar of Gabor Szabo. Ballads, Blues or just plain swingin-Desmond is Beautiful and his distinctive sound is Captivating.

as an alto player, i really appreciate the sounds of desmond on this cd. he has a very airy, mellow, soft sound which is very relaxing. i especially enjoyed the "song to a seagull," with the quiet melody that flows along. i recommend this cd for anyone who plays sax, whatever style of music, or anyone who likes to listen to soft jazz.

4.0 out of 5 stars The smooth sound of Desmond, January 24, 2011
This review is from: Best of Paul Desmond (Audio CD)
As you can tell from the other reviews, Paul Desmond has a beautiful mellow, tone, note, Take Five. Paul Desmond produces consistent quality on all his recordings. This is one of those Creed Taylor productions with the new concept of taking sounds produced in different locations and mixing them in a can. Check out Two of a Mind with Gerry Mulligan, this is where straight ahead jazz fans will be satisfied.
