4.0 out of 5 stars Incomplete, but a good primer, June 26, 2000
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
P.M. Dawn is certainly one of the most overlooked and much maligned groups of the past decade, and definately one of the best and most original. Accused in hip-hop circles of "faking the funk", and refusing to be strapped down to some of the limitations of that gendre, they took a mixture of hip-hop, trip-hop, trance techno, classic R&B and esoteric exploration and created a truly unique style. If they fake the funk, explain why they're still in demand for remixes today? Prince Be still has one of the smoothest vocal deliveries in R&B today.

This collection is a good overview and a decent introduction to P.M. Dawn's esoteric soul, but not nearly a complete collection. The best use here would have been to create a double set, one disc highlighting the singles and prime album cuts (many of those are missing), and the second disc dedicated to the many remixes they've created, both of their work and of other artists (White Zombie? Yep).

Dispite it's incomplete status, this disc is a collection of songs in a style that you won't find anywhere else. For the uninitiated, this is the best place to start...then check out the rest of the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Valiant Try..., September 30, 2002
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
In my mind there are few bands as synonymous with the early-mid 90's as PM Dawn, that wonderfully talented and introspective duo from out east. A collection of their best material to date is a no-brainer. But this collection is only partly sucessful. Many of the big tunes you would expect are here: the wonderful 'Set Adrift on Memory Bliss', 'Paper Doll', and 'Sometimes (I miss you so much)'. My beef is not so much that some good stuff was left off, but that the remixes are completely stupid and unnecessary. I never listen to them. If I want a 'dance' album I'll buy one. But here I'd rather have 15 or so of PM Dawn's best than this hodge-podge. Check out their cd's from your local library and make your own 'best of'. Save your $.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the P.M. Dawn "Best Of" I would put together but....., April 27, 2004

These days so many greatest hits are just thrown together without thought. Unfortunately this is one of them. I own all P.M. Dawn discs and I have to say I am very suprsied at the record companies lack of attention to what this band really offers.

So many would be "hits" are left off this CD. I would spend my money on their other CD's and compose your own "best Of". The beauty and intelligence of thhis band is unique and is now missing from today's bands. On the track Downtown Venus they sample the drum beat to Hush by Deep Purple and turn it into an incredible funky song. No one wlse these day is doing that. Also on the CD, Jesus Wept the song 9:45 wake-up dream was left of this compilation. This song is just pure magic.

I miss P.M. Dawn and hope they get together again for more magical moments in music.
