Incomplete, but a good primer,

P.M. Dawn is certainly one of the most overlooked and much maligned groups of the past decade, and definately one of the best and most original. Accused in hip-hop circles of "faking the funk", and refusing to be strapped down to some of the limitations of that gendre, they took a mixture of hip-hop, trip-hop, trance techno, classic R&B and esoteric exploration and created a truly unique style. If they fake the funk, explain why they're still in demand for remixes today? Prince Be still has one of the smoothest vocal deliveries in R&B today. This collection is a good overview and a decent introduction to P.M. Dawn's esoteric soul, but not nearly a complete collection. The best use here would have been to create a double set, one disc highlighting the singles and prime album cuts (many of those are missing), and the second disc dedicated to the many remixes they've created, both of their work and of other artists (White Zombie? Yep). Dispite it's incomplete status, this disc is a collection of songs in a style that you won't find anywhere else. For the uninitiated, this is the best place to start...then check out the rest of the story.

A Valiant Try...,

In my mind there are few bands as synonymous with the early-mid 90's as PM Dawn, that wonderfully talented and introspective duo from out east. A collection of their best material to date is a no-brainer. But this collection is only partly sucessful. Many of the big tunes you would expect are here: the wonderful 'Set Adrift on Memory Bliss', 'Paper Doll', and 'Sometimes (I miss you so much)'. My beef is not so much that some good stuff was left off, but that the remixes are completely stupid and unnecessary. I never listen to them. If I want a 'dance' album I'll buy one. But here I'd rather have 15 or so of PM Dawn's best than this hodge-podge. Check out their cd's from your local library and make your own 'best of'. Save your $.

Not the P.M. Dawn "Best Of" I would put together but.....,

These days so many greatest hits are just thrown together without thought. Unfortunately this is one of them. I own all P.M. Dawn discs and I have to say I am very suprsied at the record companies lack of attention to what this band really offers. So many would be "hits" are left off this CD. I would spend my money on their other CD's and compose your own "best Of". The beauty and intelligence of thhis band is unique and is now missing from today's bands. On the track Downtown Venus they sample the drum beat to Hush by Deep Purple and turn it into an incredible funky song. No one wlse these day is doing that. Also on the CD, Jesus Wept the song 9:45 wake-up dream was left of this compilation. This song is just pure magic. I miss P.M. Dawn and hope they get together again for more magical moments in music.

Not the ...best of,

I am a huge PM Dawn fan but this compilation is missing some vital songs of PM Dawn's evolution through their 4 albums. I could go into several examples but will only say..where is Hale-Bopp Regurgitations (from Dearest Christian..)This 'best of' ended up as a very one sided picture of a much more versatile band. If this is the only PM Dawn album you own (or plan to own) than do yourself a favour and buy the 4 CDs and you will discover the REAL magic of PM Dawn..far beyond what this CD portrays.

Hip-Hop at its Most Atmospheric,

This is a timely reminder of P.M. Dawn's wholly original form of Hip-Hop, R&B, Pop and Psychedelic sound. Their music was so dreamy that at times its easy to forget what great lyrics Prince Be wrote. So give songs like "Being So Not For You" and "Downtown Venus" (that should've been big hits) a closer listen and you then begin to see that along with their sound came good words. Sampling all 4 of their albums (all are recommended) and 1 Soundtrack song this serves its purpose in exposing P.M. Dawn as one of Rap's greatest groups.

Prince Be is a classical poet,

Many dismiss P.M. dawn as being just another R and B band but it isn't so. Really listen to any of they're albums and what you get is a musical discourse of the human condition. Prince Be skillfully muses philosophy, religion, love, and hate. His is very eloquent with words, and the variety of musical styles doesn't hurt either. Although I think that the changes in musical presentation between albums has hurt them a little because it makes them hard to classify. This CD is adequate to a beginers pallatte, but unfortunately only really scratchs the suface of the bands depth. This CD is mostly love songs which in my opinion is an unjust representation of a diverse band. some of the remixs are interesting. i wonder if Prince be is going to steer the band in a more techno direction for their next disc. Makes me wish he and Moby would collaberate together since they're both on the same label.

A Must Buy for Jazz-Rap fans...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
P.M. Dawn was, without too much controversy, the best of Jazz-Rap. The smoothness with which the music and lyrics were delivered was, and still is today, unriveled in the general market. It is the unfortunate fact that after the wide success of their first album the later three remained somewhat shadowed. This isn't to say that the P.M. Dawn discography is at all not worthy of purchase...they simply didn't get the air play to keep us (the music consumers) interested and informed. To tell you the truth, I didn't know that P.M. Dawn put either of the last two albums out until after I purchased this disc (The Best of P.M. Dawn)! I guess that radio is more interested in the "Boy Band craze" and "sex pot teenage pop singers"? Or maybe I am just getting old? In any case, this is an excellent purchase for those of you who remember the height of the P.M. Dawn "Set Adrift..." days and want to relive those memories! The tracks were selected well, and this does represent the best P.M. Dawn had to offer. I agree, a double-disc set would have showcased a much more accurate "Best of..." list, but what they have shared with us is pretty much the gold.

I loved PM Dawn "back in the day" - and when I watched Chuck and Larry I heard some PM Dawn music and thought "Oh yeah, Amazon here I come." I'm so glad I ordered it, I love "Die Without You" and "Set Adrift On A Memory Bliss," which are classics, but it's a great CD-- and I'm sure you'll love it as well!

of course, i wasn't prepared to purchase anything other than a greatest hits album from a band that gains a hit single from sampling a highly celebrated, super-recognizable 80's jam. but... that may change. this collection is pretty dang good. very smooth. and as if that were ever in question, customers who bought _the best of PM DAWN_ also bought albums by SEAL. haha. seriously, this is pretty good. a suave blend of melodic rapping, lush vocal harmonies and smooth, synthesized dance music. the sprinkling of well-placed piano flourishes is a nice touch too. according to wikipedia, the brothers who make up PM DAWN have a step-father who played in KOOL AND THE GANG, which i find hilarious. fortunately, it doesn't have any lingering effect on the music of PM DAWN. in fact, it's not so hard to see how these guys managed to stick around for a few albums. this is a good collection that draws from all three of their albums. these guys are quite tenacious, actually. according to wikipedia (again), one of the brothers suffered through not one but two strokes, and then lost his leg due to poor arterial circulation. and even after all this, apparently, there's still a reunion tour in the works.
