Not an accurate reflection of the real GRE, February 10, 2003
This review is from: The Best Test Preparation for the GRE Psychology with Disks (TESTware) (Paperback)
I bought this book because it had more practice GRE Psychology tests than any of the other study guides I could find. The fact that there are 6 tests (and therefore, over 1,000 questions) is a definite plus -- you can get lots of practice.
However, that's the most positive thing I could say about this book. The original edition of this book was written years ago, and it shows. Many of the topics they cover are outdated, and they often use antiquated terms that aren't used in the field anymore. They also spend an inordinate amount of space covering topics that are no longer hot-button issues, and give short shrift to new areas that are the focus of current research.
Many questions are ambiguous and/or poorly worded. In taking any of their practice exams, be prepared for a lot of anxiety that's unrelated to the extent of your knowledge of psychology: you'll waste a lot of time just trying to figure out what their questions are really asking.
They also seem to love testing your knowledge of psychological researchers and their contributions to the field. The real GRE exam does this to an extent, but doesn't ask nearly as many questions about it as these practice exams will lead you to believe. Sure, you must know about Freud, Piaget, Erikson, Chomsky, and the like, but you don't have to waste your time or energy memorizing the contributions of every single researcher in the field since its inception.
Because the topics, concepts, and terms covered in this book are outdated, and because there are too many questions asking you to match obscure researchers to their experiments, and also because you will get many incorrect answers due to misinterpretation of their poorly-worded questions, the scores you get on this book's practice exams will not accurately reflect your score on the real GRE exam. For a much more accurate score, download and take the free practice exam from the ETS GRE website,.... For a good study guide (covering topics the real GRE Psychology test covers), check out Princeton Review's "Cracking the GRE Psychology Test," also available at Amazon.com.
Unless you really want practice answering lots and lots of multiple choice questions (many of which don't accurately reflect questions on the real test), don't waste your money on this book.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK, July 19, 2004

This review is from: The Best Test Preparation for the GRE Psychology with Disks (TESTware) (Paperback)
I bought this book because, after thumbing through it, I noticed it had many, many sample questions. What I didn't find out until I started studying was that the questions cover totally obscure material that will not appear on the actual test. This suspicion was confirmed when I actually took the psych GRE. Luckily, I quickly saw that this book was worthless and I switched to Princeton Review's Cracking the GRE and scored an 800 (I was also a psych major, which helped ALOT). It didn't take me long to see that I had wasted my money on REA's book--bad sample questions will not help you, no matter how many there are! Memorize everything in Princeton Review's book and you will be in MUCH better shape!

A good review but some elements lacking, April 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Best Test Preparation for the GRE Psychology with Disks (TESTware) (Paperback)
The book is a good review of the field of psych. and offers good practice for the GRE. If you take the practice tests and study the topics on them you should be ok for the GRE. Not perfect though. Some areas on the real GRE are lacking on this one but it should help somewhat.
