5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT A VOICE!, May 15, 2000
This review is from: Best of Rca Years (Audio CD)
This has become one of my favorite CDs that I own. Betty has the nerve to switch from a ballad to a scream then hock up a spitball mid song, or stutter throughout a whole song. This CD is perfect for any manic depessive! It starts out with her very best song (if you enjoyed Bjorks version, you'll really appreciate the original), then works its way with a surprise on every track! My favorite tracks are Murder He Says, and the first 3 tracks. If you enjoy Betty Hutton you MUST find the out of print CD Capitol's Great Women Of Song. This is a better selection of popular songs and shows off her vocal talents best. Betty proves she's one of the most versitile singers ever. The only drawback to The RCA Years CD is that there are no liner notes or even song writer credits! GET THIS CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Straight A's all the way!, November 3, 2002
This review is from: Best of Rca Years (Audio CD)
An underrated actress and comedienne from the 1940s wartime era, Huttom was actually the younger sibling of Marion Hutton, longtime "girl" singer with the Glenn Miller orchestra. Her vocal work is sometimes hampered by its comedic aspects -- although she was capable of singing ballads and love songs every bit as sweetly as her big sister, Hutton yonked and squawked her way through most songs. Still, she's a dynamo and tunes like "I'm Just A Square (In A Social Circle)" and "Can't Stop Talkin' About Him" are pretty impressive in their swinging, toungue-twisty dynamics alone. Better yet, try and check her out in her film appearances, to get the full picture of what a great performer she was. 1945's "The Stork Club" is one of her best vehicles. Capitol's "Spotlight On Betty Hutton" collection concentrates on her more serious straight "pop" stuff (though with a few great goofy tunes), while this BMG set is more deliberately kooky. They're both great, and both worth tracking down, although the RCA disc has the liability of offering zilcho in the way of liner notes... A shame, really, although the music itself is a lot of fun. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kooky and sexy and swinging..., September 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Best of Rca Years (Audio CD)
This album is a joy. Many of these comic songs show Hutton's vocal ability at its peak -- she's wacky and funny, yet also sincere and appealling. She's the kind of musical performer who gives her all and seems larger than life. The musical arrangements really swing, especially when she's backed by Vincent Lopez. A truly great female comic singer!
