So Much More Than An Angel,
By
This review is from: Best of Real Life: Send Me An Angel (Audio CD)
While best known for hits like "Send Me An Angel" and "Catch Me I'm Falling," there is so much more to the band and this CD explodes with good music. Before I begin, keep in mind that this CD is mostly a collection of single and extended remixes. so, grab the re-issue of Heartland if you want the original versions of "Send Me An Angel" and "Catch Me I'm Falling." If ever there was a great song that fell through the cracks, it was "Let's Fall In Love." How this never charted, let alone not make the top 10 is beyond me. This is my favourite track on the album by far. Much more up beat and polished compared to the original version on "Flame." This is a high energy dance track that forces you to sing along in your car (so drive at night). "Always" has a sensational build up, "Hammer of Love" is infectious, and "Babies" is delightfully dark. Of course, you get both the radio and extended mixes of "Send Me An Angel '89". The song first broke the top 20 in 1983, was remixed in 1988, and charted in the top 20 again. The extended mix is a must have. Unlike so many other 80's bands, Real Life started with a brilliant debut album and just kept going. The sounds and style may have changed a little into the new millenium, but the band's ability to write great music and lyrics shines. If you like good synthpop that does not sound like just another OMD, Depeche Mode or Human League clone, Real Life may be just what you need. Be sure to pick up the CD that followed this collection, "Lifetime" and the 1983 debut "Heartland," which was just re-issued.

Good stuff, but a glaring omission,

Basically a compilation of "Heartland", "Flame" and the "Babies" maxi single, this is a nice little collection to find its way to CD.
Of course, the huge miss here is not including the original version of "Send Me an Angel". The new version simply does not compare to the original. I really enjoyed "Flame" and am grateful to find such great tunes included as "Face to Face" and "No Shame". Their take of "Babies" is surprisingly good too. If you're looking for "Heartland", it has been reissued on CD. It's well worth seeking out that disk for the original version of "Send Me an Angel".

Must have for New Wavers!!!,

The best track on this cd is the hypnotic "Send Me an Angel" Dance Mix, and the first track which is just a shorter version. My only disappointment is that this cd does not contain the original version from 1983, which is equally as wonderful as the '89 mixes. "Send Me an Angel" is one of the most moving and soul soothingly wonderful songs to ride the new wave in the eighties! If you listen to Depeche Mode or Duran Duran, then Real Life comes somewhere in between! Other big hits from Real Life include "Catch Me I'm Falling" (I must admit, I have always found this song to be kind of annoying), and Always(good song). My personal favorites include "Babies", "No Shame", and "One Blind Love". I think the talent of this group wears a little thin in some of the songs I have not mentioned, but the two "Send Me an Angel" tracks are the centerpiece to this collection.
